    NIJO-JO: Symbolised the power & riches of Edo-based shogunate. Built by Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616), this is also the place where the last Tokugawa shogun resigned in the presence of Emperor Meiji.

    The very famous Karamon Gate, entrance to Ninomaru compound. This Momoyama-period gate has a Chinese-style gable & gold plated fixtures. Exquisite!

    Nijo Castle was built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, and was his residence (home) in Kyoto.
    This Castle includes the Honmaru (main compound, Important Cultural Property), originally Katsura-no-miya Palace, and a magnificent Ninomaru Palace; a Momoyama style architecture full of gorgeous decorations.

    Nijo-jo Castle; Tokugawa Shogun residence
    The castle was originally built in 1603 to be the official Kyoto residence of the first Tokugawa Shogun Ieyasu. The grounds are immense which surround the castle and you could wander for hours. Inside the castle itself was the real treat for me. It is said that the floors were built so that they would creak therefore no one could sneak in to the castle. The paintings inside this building were also incredible. This is a must see!!
