Shinkansen
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Shinkansen is probably the most common way to travel to Kyoto. Travelling in Japan should include the Shinkansen at least once. You can easily reach from Kyoto any major city in Japan, e.g. Tokyo, Kobe, Osaka, Okayama or even Fukuoka. Trains are punctual, reliable, and clean.
Depending on your travel itinerary it might be sensible to buy a Japan Rail Pass. It is only for foreign tourists and must be bought outside the country. Note that you cannot use the Nozomi Super Express with the JR Pass.

    JR Kyoto Station
  • Tip Rating:
  • The easiest way for travellers to get to Kyoto is by train. Japan Railways is the fastest. JR Kyoto Station was rebuilt in 1997 by Japanese architect Hiroshi Hara. It is a huge complex boasting a department store, restaurants, a theater, & more on its levels. JR Kyoto Station is not just a station but a monument; definitely a must-see for all visitors to Kyoto.

  • Took an overnight bus from Tokyo in Kyoto. The bus moved very slowly (7-8 hours) and stopped to arrive at Kyoto in the early morning. So can save on accommodation and is much cheaper than taking the bullet train. Of course, most of the passengers are Japanese. Slippers, pillow, blankets as well as tea bags and hot water provided.

  • It is very convenient to take the subway to go around Kyoto. There's a day pass for both the subway and the buses for JPY1,200 valid just for one day.

  • In Kyoto it is convienent to travel by bus. You can buy a buspass for 500 Yen (April 2003 price) which is valid for one day on the city busses. There are also passes that can be used on both bus and subway but they are much more expensive.

    There is a perfect connection...
  • Tip Rating:
  • There is a perfect connection to Tokyo and the other major cities of Japan by Shinkansen. Fast and comfortable.
Though visiting all temples would be an almost impossible job on foot. Take some clusters and do the distance between them by bus or tram. Walking however, will give you the best impression of this magnificent town.

If you want to come from...
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you want to come from Europe, Australia or America the best way to get into Kyoto is to fly to Osaka Int'l Airport (Kansai). The Airport is located south of Osaka on a Island. Most International Airlines are flying into Kansai. JAL and ANA are operating also International Routes to many over sea destinations.

From Kansai Airport you get within 70-80 min. to Kyoto Main Station. After Immigration at Kansai you get into a big hall, take the elevator to the Railway level and there are counters to take a ticket for if you have pre ordered a Japan Railway Pass you can pick it uf here. Take the Haruka Express to Kyoto, it is leaving around every half hour and it stopes in Osaka, Shin-Osaka and from there it goes non-stop to Kyoto (on the picture a Shinkansen arriving at Kyoto Station).
The One-Way Ticket Kansai-Kyoto cost up to 45USD.

    Enjoy your trip...
