  • Tip Rating:
  • Taxis are expensive... but sometimes convenient. From Kyoto Station to the city center is a 5-10minute ride and costs about 600Yen. The big black ones are more comfortable and don't cost any more!

This is a view of Marutamachi street, due east.

  • Tip Rating:
  • pay 70dollars each for this!?! I tried this in Nara, but it was about half the price. The guys pulling you along dont speak English, which can be a good thing as ours talked our ear off and I saw other Japanese tourists suffering in the same way. They seem to be enjoying themselves though...

  • Tip Rating:
  • The subway. The Karasuma Line runs through the heart of the city and tourist use it mainly from Kyoto Station. It takes only about 1-2 minutes to get from one stop to the next. The cost depends on how many stops you go, about 230Yen.

    Bullet trains.. absolutely......
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bullet trains.. absolutely... You move so fast (and you don't even feel like you are moving..).
Amazing how fast and yet smooth they are.
'How can you tell the hoboes in Japan? - They're the guys w/ no arms!'

Foot and bus... We walked up into the neighborhoods... quite a nice walk.. nice little homes...

Buy an all day (or two day)...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Buy an all day (or two day) combined pass for subway and train. Kyoto is smaller than it looks. You can cover practically everything in two days.

    Kyoto Station.
  • Tip Rating:
  • KYOTO STATION: If you arrive by the JR (JAPAN RAIL) this is your first contact with Kyoto. Kyoto City TIC is located on the 2nd floor main concourse (Tel: 075-343 6655). Also, check out the station's shopping area called THE CUBE which has shops specialising in local food products & Kyoto crafts.

    Kansai International Airport.
  • Tip Rating:
  • The nearest international gateway to Kyoto is through the Kansai International Airport which is in the city of Osaka. A high-tech airport unrivalled by any in Asia, this is one place you must take time to explore, just to amaze oneself with the ingenuity of the architects. Built on a man-made island, the airport is already sinking every year!

  • Travel on the SHINKANSEN: the fastest train service, also known as 'bullet' trains connecting major cities in Japan from the south island of Kyushu to the north island of Hokkaido. These super-express trains reach speeds of up to 270 km/h, a great way to travel! Speeding from Tokyo to Kyoto is a great ride; there are 4 Shinkansen routes, all originating from Tokyo. One runs via Nagoya, Kyoto, Osaka and Hiroshima to Shimonoseki at west Honshu and then to Fukuoka on north Kyushu (the south island of Japan). The second line runs from Tokyo up north to Niigata (north Honshu). Another runs via Sendai to Morioka & the fourth line to Yamagata. What an exhilarating experience!

From Tokyo it takes 2 hours & 40 mins by bullet train.
From Osaka it takes 40 mins by train.

A network of bus lines covers the whole city & buses run every 7 to 20 mins until 10 pm.
