Kyoto-fu Nightlife

  • Gion and Pontocho

    Kyoto Nightlife

At night when the temples are closed, in Kyoto, one activity to do is to watch the Cultural Show of geishas and maikos, short displays of introduction Kabuki, Noh, Bunraku, puppet show, comedy, story telling and the tea ceremony. It is a all-in-one introduction of Japanese high culture which is worth seeing at least once. You can also take a lot of...

  • "A" Bar

    Kyoto Nightlife

A Bar is... A bar! It's one of the many hole-in-the-wall bars around the Gion area and it's popular among foreigners for some reason. There are a fair amount of drinking options and the menu is in both English and Japanese. Like many of the bars in the area, it is not very large and as more people enter, they are seated wherever there is room, so...

  • ING Bar

    Kyoto Nightlife

ING bar was defiantly a traditional small bar with seating for around 30 people (crammed) that has friendly staff/owners and tunes rocking out, cheap beer and a good singalong however if you are a non smoker run for the hills, within 10 mins of being there you will smell like an ash tray, and we were not there on a busy night, eventually this...

  • Hub Bar

    Kyoto Nightlife

It is a fairly relaxed foreigner bar, very little sleaze factor. When we go out we usually meet here. Beer is about 500Yen which is good value but the same goes for non-alcoholic drinks, which is a rip-off!! :( I love their fried salmon and chips and also their Ceasar Salad, (about 500Yen each). They also have Guiness on Tap.

  • Pig and Whistle

    Kyoto Nightlife

The Pig and Whistle is a popular Irish Pub in Eastern Kyoto at Sanjo Station, just north of Gion. This huge bar and restaurant has seats for probably 75 or 100 customers on either side of the bar. The pub does have an authentic feel, though the staff is almost entirely Japanese, and they do employ the odd Japanese ordering system where they make...

  • Tadg's Irish Bar (Formerly McLoughlin's)

    Kyoto Nightlife

Tadg's Irish Pub is a great bar in Kyoto's Pontocho district one block west of the Kamo River (Kamo-gawa). This friendly establishment is on the 8th floor of a building overlooking the city and offering a nice variety of foreign and Japanese craft beers. We only stayed for perhaps an hour at this magnet for Western travelers in Kyoto. I started...

  • Bar Isn't It?

    Kyoto Nightlife

I hate this place. But, MANY foreigners (age group 21-31)love it. This is a point of contention between me and my friends. I find it sleazy, smoky and the staff really unfriendly. Still, you can meet people for sure after a few drinks. It is essentially a pick-up bar. eeeuuggh :/ None. Just the usual casual stuff like jeans, mini skirts etc.

  • Aqua Fantasy

    Kyoto Nightlife

This is a somewhat odd sight. On the roof of a small shop in front of Kyoto Station is a nightly display in which water jets are lit to look a little like fireworks and are set to music in a synchronised show. It’s a bit corny but fun, and worth stopping to watch if in the area. My flagging camera battery had gained a new lease of life with a...

  • Man in the Moon Pub

    Kyoto Nightlife

Man in the Moon is an Irish Pub that has three locations in Kyoto. I visited the newest of the three pubs, located in Gion, which just opened in early 2013. The pub is tiny, perhaps able to seat 25, but it is friendly and comfortable, and I like the windows that open to the street. The clean establishment was full of young Westerners enjoying beer...

  • Club Metro

    Kyoto Nightlife

If you like 'alternative' music, 80's, techno, acid-jazz etc. Metro is not bad. They have a monthly schedule. A very small bar and the atmosphere varies with what's on that night. Depends on the night, eg. techno night- techno gear, Beatles night- ummmm...

  • Sports Bar Africa (Pub Africa)

    Kyoto Nightlife

Except for some of the decorations this bar made me think of many things but definitely not the continent its name refers to. Then again, I had never been to a pub named Africa with music from Mariah Carey to Whitney Houston and three TVs and a big screen showing soccer, Japanese soap opera, a nature document and something close to CSI all at the...

  • Sent James Club

    Kyoto Nightlife

There are 2 Sent James Clubs in Kyoto. One in Honten and one in Ponto-cho. I went to the Ponto-cho one with my friend (who is I might add crazy about jazz). But Im not and you dont have to be a jazz person to come here! Its a nice, mellow bar. Dark wooden interior. Flickering candlelights to set that jazzy mood.. But the music is played very low -...

  • Cafe Soware

    Kyoto Nightlife

In case you didn't know it, Japan is in a coffee boom. But as much as I'm fond of Starbucks (there are now 5 of them just in central Kyoto! And also Tulley's... ) it's lovely to go somewhere with a little more character. You will find coffee houses all over Kyoto! See if you can find one that suits you!

  • Brasserie Cafe Onze

    Kyoto Nightlife

Onze is a nice little French wine bar in Shijo where most of the city's nightlife is located. There is a food menu featuring their breads, cheeses, and others foods. Then there is a separate menu for the drinks and alcohol. There are quite a few options for alchohol, and some other options as well. I had some of the alcohol but I found the hot...

  • Cafe Independants

    Kyoto Nightlife

A few meters west of Teramachi/Sanjo. Go downstairs. I would have like it more in my University days, I think. Rather large bar downstairs, with no actual bar to sit at, but big garden-like tables. Also have snacks like salsa chips etc.
