    Kyoto Tourist Traps

If you are a picky eater, make sure to point the food at the window gallery if you wanted a particular food. Don't choose the food that you don't know how it looks like or taste like. The reason why? You end up wasting your money! I am not a picky eater but still, there are some food that are new to me especially when I am travelling. My stomach...

Ok ... sometimes tour books get a bit over excited on some must do's and recommendations ..... In Fodor's they go out of there way to make sure that if your in the Gion section of town to attend the Gion Corner show !!!! it states traditional Japanese show compacted into about 90 minutes from a Tea Ceremony to Geisha dancing to Imperial music show...

    Kyoto Tourist Traps

OK. I first heard about a guesthouse called Toji-an from a tip on VT. Then I saw the website - very cheap and looks nice. But when we arrived there, it was not like what I saw on the website... First impression: the noren (the cloth hung up in front of the door) was torn and dirty. The toilet stinks and the smell reached the hallway where the...

  • Kyoto Tower

    Kyoto Tourist Traps

You can´t miss Kyoto Tower. It is standing tall above the city, opposite the Kyoto station. I t is built in 1964 and is 131 m high. The observationdeck is 100 m high. The admission fee is like the tower: skyhigh! If you go to the top of Kyoto station there is a free observation deck. And the views from the skywalk in Kyoto station are also great!

  • Kyoto Imperial Palace

    Kyoto Tourist Traps

Kyoto Imperial Palace Not a tourist trap, but only moderately interesting inside the walls of the inner Palace. No admittance to any of the buildings or through the beautiful garden around the pond. :: The grounds outside the central Palace walls are similar to Central Park in New York City - a huge landscaped area located in the center of the...

  • Kyoto Station

    Kyoto Tourist Traps

Kyoto station could easily become a tourist trap due to its overwhelming size and for the fact that for a novice navigating around the station can be pretty confusing. Almost everything that is written in Japanese is also written in English, Chinese, and Korean, but its still hard to find people who speak your language in a pinch. Just take it...

  • Iwatayama Monkey Park

    Kyoto Tourist Traps

Arashiyama has many great hikes and so much beautiful scenery. Monkey Mountain is a short and easy walk up a small mountain. At the top there is a rest station where the monkes hang! You go inside and the monkey's gather around the outside. You can buy small treats to feed the monkes. On your way down there is a long slide that monkeys and humans...

  • Souvenirs

    Kyoto Tourist Traps

For people who visit a lot of tourist spots, this may go without saying, but I'll remind you any way. Prices close to major tourist spots, especially shrines and temples, are considerably higher than the prices for the same goods elsewhere in the city. For example a "soft cream" (soft-serve ice cream) costs about 300 yen in the tourist shops in...

  • Toei Movie Village

    Kyoto Tourist Traps

This place is recommended if you have kids, but my kids were less than enthusiastic about this place. It is quite expensive and many rides and shows cost extra when you get in. The rides were not that good, nor was the 'entertainment'. You could watch a samurai show in action, but it was actually dull. There are souvenirs sold at inflated prices...

  • Spring Blossom Dance

If you do go to see the Spring Blossom Dance (Tips, To Do) Don't buy tickets that include the tea ceremony there. It is a real rip-off. Just forget it. Get your tea in a local tea house. Much, much nicer. You can get a nice tea in any local tea house. If you want a real tea ceremony that has to be arranged in advance.

  • Rihga Royal's Not-so-revolving...

I stayed at the Rihga Royal hotel, and for breakfast one morning, decided to eat in their revolving restaurant on the top of the building (12ish stories up). Well it never moved. For the first 15 minutes, I figured it moved really slow. Then I started marking landmarks to see if suddenly they were no longer in my view. So before you spend the money...
