There are 3 different bullet trains (Shinkansen) from Tokyo to Kyoto.

The fastest is the Nozomi. It takes 2 hours 20 minutes.
The next is the Hikari, which takes about 20 minutes more.
The slowest is the Kodama take 4 hours for the same trip.

The standard fare (non-reserved) is 12,710 Yen on any train.
A reserved seat on the Kodama or Hikari, costs 13,200 Yen.
A reserved seat on the Nozomi costs 13,500 Yen.

There are also special passes which reduce the price:

The Hikari Hayatoku Kippu will buy a reserved seat on the Hikari for 11,500 Yen. It must be bought at least one week in advance.

The Puratto Kodama Economy Plan will buy a reserved seat on the Kodama for 9,800 Yen, plus one free drink on the train. It must be bought at least one day in advance.

(Prices as of November 2009)

JR -West Rail Pass

The train system is aslo well established in West of Japan. If you want to take longer travelling times in Japan, you can consider to buy JR-West Rail Pass. It is worth using it as one day travel to somewhere 1 to 2 hour away from Kyoto. for example : Himeji, Kobe , Namba, Nara or Universal-city, even from Kansai airport. Since for one way to airport , if you buy it from the ticket machine in the station in Kansai airport to Kyoto, it costs 2230 yen.

You can buy it in the station , and it's for traveller, you have to show your passport when you buy it.

City Bus within Kyoto

The comparision cheap traffic in Kyoto is bus. All the bus in the city is the same price at one way -- 220 yen. But you can find that there is one day travel tickets of bus , it costs only 500 yen.

So if you want to go more than one place, I suggest that you can buy one day ticket. And the bus station is very clear and print on the travel map when you buy the one day ticket in the bus station where is located just outside the Kyoto train station. The bus map is included the route to and from any places. So when you get the budget travel, you can plan it well in order to deduce the cost of traffic.

Since the cost of traffic in Japan will make you over budget, you 'd better think what and where you can take the advantage. Once I took the subway in Kyoto, since the location of the train and subway station is not connected, you can not easily find the transist from one destination to another. So I looked around the signal on the wall, some friendly traveller wrote that "go to the station , just walk 15 mins , do not spend transit by train , it is very expensive". Wow ! when I watched this words I could not stop my laughing !

The bus company is well establish in Kyoto. I think it is very good for travelling !

I hope this helps !
