    Toba Aquarium

by Rabbityama Written Jan 8, 2009

The Toba Aquarium is famous for being one of Japan's best aquariums, and it lives up to its reputation! The aquarium is divided into sections that each represent a different type of aquatic life. The aquarium features a wide variety of fish, shellfish, and jellyfish. Along with these, there are dolphins, stingrays, nautilus, porpoises, seals, otters, and seahorses. The highlight of the museum are the huge African manatees, something not found at most aquariums in the world. They also have dugongs, which are smaller but also a rare endangered species.

Along with the aquatic life, the aquarium also has exhibits of insects, frogs, pelicans, penguins, and toucans! There are also sea lion shows, which last only about 30 minutes, but are very cute and well-done.

The entrance fee is 2400 yen for adults, 1200 for junior high students and 600 yen for children. To view every exhibit, including the seal show, it should take about 3.5 hours at a moderate pace. It is also handicap accessible.

    Mikomoto pearl culture at Toba

by SLLiew Updated Sep 15, 2007

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Toba is the world's birthplace of artificial peal when Koichi Mikomoto could duplicate the mass production of pearls in oysters in 1893. Until then, the pearl was a random act of nature - an abnormal growth of lucre in a wild growing oyster in the ocean.

Joined an amazing tour of Mikomoto Pearl Culture Center. Saw the different steps of artifiicial pearl cultivation, inclusive of a boat ride to where all the pearl oysters are hung out to grow to maturity until they are harvested.

Also saw the famous underwater ladies who would dived for sea products in the cold water.

Of course, the final stop was shopping at the pearl jewelry and souvenir center. Not to be missed for all pearl lovers.

Toba Aquarium - A Must See

by SLLiew Written Aug 8, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

I have been to aquariums around the world like Monterrey and in Boston and was surprised to find this excellent aquarium at Toba.

Many large and well maintained tanks. Worth the visit especially if you have come all the way to Toba. Japanese tourists exclaiming "sugoi" at every tank. (sugoi=wow)

To pay to enter or not, it is worth it.

    To Toba from Osaka

by Rabbityama Written Jan 8, 2009

From Osaka, you can easily get to Toba with only one transfer. From Osaka Station, go to Tsuruhashi. From Tsuruhashi you can then go directly to Toba Station using the Kintetsu Line.

The cost from Osaka is approximately 3620 yen, but prices are always subject to change, so check before you go.

    Toba Aquarium - deadly neighborhood

by SLLiew Written Oct 23, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: What a surprising combination of putting loads of moray eels and scorpion fishes in a tank.

Cannot imagine which is worse - a nasty bite from the eel or a venomous sting from the poisonous spines of the scorpion fish.

You probably heard of the infamous expensive and can-be=deadly Japanese delicacy of the blowfish (fugu) sushi.

Wonder whether moray eel and scorpion fish sushi will be next.

    Toba Aquarium - Dugong Encounter

by SLLiew Written Oct 23, 2006

    3.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Favorite thing: This was my first encounter with a dugong.

Apparently sailors has mistaken dugongs as mermaids. Having seen one swim so closely, it is possible to imagine so if one is drunk on high seas and being away from women for a long period of time.

Anyway, dugong are still known to be found limited to Okinawa in Japan. Dugongs are found in coastal areas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans around Africa, Asia and Australasia.

Well, good to meet one in Toba.
