The Dutch influence on Nagasaki is still seen today. Several European-style buildings have been preserved as historical sites, Christianity is evident in the local culture and many Dutch words can still be found in the Japanese language. Leave a Comment

The Japanese rulers of those days were eager to trade but they were afraid that Christianity might be a danger to the country, native converts might facilitate an invasion by a European power, and in 1639 the government decided to thoroughly suppress Christianity and expel all foreigners except the Dutch and Chinese, who were willing to trade without engaging in missionary activities. In 1641 the Dutch were ordered to move their trading post to Dejima, a small artificial island in the harbor of Nagasaki. The city became Japan's sole gateway for international trade and exchange till 1859 when the isolation was ended. Leave a Comment

This 105-meter tower is a replica of Holland's tallest church tower. The tower is the symbol of Huis Ten Bosch. Visitors can take the elevator to the observatory, from the 80 meter viewing floor you have a beautiful space view of the streets and Omura Bay. At the foot of the tower there is the world restaurant district, here you can enjoy exquisite cuisine from all around the world. The housing area at the left side is called Wassenaar. This is the residential area of Huis Ten Bosch. Leave a Comment
