We walked from JR station to visit the places of interest. We felt too tired to walk back on the hot and sunny day, so we took a bus back to the station. Remember to collect the ticket when you board the bus. Then give to the driver when you alight and pay for the ride. The transportation system is excellent in Nara too. There's a circle route around Nara.

There are two types of busses in Nara; one is front-embarking and rear-disembarking type and another is front-disembarking and rear-embarking type. For the former, the passengers pay their fare in advance when they board the bus. The fare is fixed throughout the service zones. For the latter, passengers take a numbered ticket when boarding the bus, and pay the fare according to the number on the ticket. The fare is indicated at the front display panel.

Side Trip from Kyoto to Nara

Nara JR Station

Nara is a very convenient and well-worth side trip frpm Kyoto or Osaka in the Kanto area.

From Kyoto, I took a JR train from Kyoto Station to Nara, and the trip was about 45mins by rapid train.

Exiting Nara station, go towards the left of the station and cross at the traffic lights. You will go up a shopping street, Sanjo Dori which will lead you to Nara Park and all the must-see sights in about 20 mins. An hour or more if you stop to browse the interesting shops..... :)

From Kyoto: Kintetsu line (30 m, Y610), JR line (45 m, Y690).
Nara park is at walking distance from the train stations, to the east: 10 minutes from Kintetsu, 25 minutes from JR. You will start seeing some deers before reaching the park itself.

The bikes are light and do not have any gears.
The breaks work well though.
Bike hire in Nara is cheaper than other Japanese towns.

Hire a bike next to the JR station.

When staying in Kyoto or going through Kyoto, you can take a local train that brings you quickly to Nara.
Walking is adequate to get around in the not that large territory of the temples of Nara.
