Half Time: Coffee Break at the Cafeteria in National Museum

by MINOSUKE

If you have gotten tired from walking a lot and want to take a coffee break, I recommend you this coffee shop. This coffee shop, Half Time, is on the basement of Nara National Museum, which is almost in the center of Nara Park. A slope will take you to the coffee shop. The shop is clean and large and not so crowded even in the tourist season. I never fail to drop in here when I go to Nara.

Ashibinosato: Enjoy Comfortable Atmosphere and Japanese Lunch

by MINOSUKE

Whenever I go to Nara, I am at a loss where to have lunch. To me, finding a good restaurant in Nara seems very difficult. This restaurant was recommended by two people who know Nara very well. One was brought up in Nara and visits her parents in Nara once a week. The other is working as a volunteer guide for tourists. The name of the restaurant 'Ashibinosato' means 'the home of Ashibi (Japanese andromeda, a symbolic plant of Nara)'.This restaurant is located in the precinct of an old temple, Gangouji. You can enjoy the traditional Japanese buildings used for the restaurant as well as the food. Box Lunch : 1260 yen.The menu of the side dish will often be changed. When I went there, three pork rolls were included.

Chugokuji Temple: Famous Noodles

by nickinosaka

On the hike between Miwa and Tenri is a little temple called Chugokuji, which (according to the LP guide, at least) is reknowned for its noodles. We stopped in once, and they were quite good. Good texture to the noodles, just the right degree of firmness, and the broth was well-flavoured. It's well-placed to stop for lunch going either way. I'm pretty sure the noodles are all they serve.

Roadside Fruit Stands in Nara-ken: Best Fruit Ever

by nickinosaka

Along the hiking path between Miwa and Tenri are several fruit stands. Most are run on the honour system (in fact I have yet to see one attended). Last time I was there I had some strawberries that were not only the best strawberries I've ever tasted, they were the best fruit I've ever tasted. And strawberries aren't on my list of favourite fruits to begin with. It will depend on the season of course, but I was lucky enough to be there just after the harvest.

A: Anyone for Okonomiyaki?

by phoebelosophy

A tiny local Japanese Okonomiyaki (egg/cabbage pancake thing) restaurant/bar. 'A' is a great little place to sit down and enjoy a cosy dinner for two or a lively after-work beer for six.The standard of the food is excellent, and the service is warm and friendly, even though the workers can't speak a word of English! Buttah (pork) Okonomiyaki - a traditional style okonomiyaki with bacon on top. Smothered in 'sauce' and mayo it's devine!
