The best way to get to Gosen is to take a 45min train trip from Niigata Station, this costs 400. Depending on the train you take, you may have to change trains at Niitsu Station half way. If this is the case, it would be an advantage to be able to ask in Japanese which train you should take because all signs and timetables are in Japanese (mostly kanji).
Alternatively, you can drive from Niigata City and this takes around an hour.
