It takes about an hour to get to Maki from Niigata station. From Niigata station you'll see plenty of the city an as you get to Maki you'll watch it turn into farmland and countryside. If you have plans to transfer to see other areas near Maki, it is best to start off earlier in the morning as there can be a lot of travel time lag waiting for trains going to other areas from Maki station. The trains in the countryside don't travel as often as they do closer within Niigata city.
