Maki Things to Do

  • The view from atop Mt. Yahiko

Here is a great place to take in the view of the Niigata plain and the Sea of Japan. Good to catch the sunset, too.

  • Yahiko Station

Yahiko Station's architecture is fashioned in much the same style as that of Yahiko Shrine that is located only about 5 minutes on foot from here. From here you can also see beautiful Yahiko park, the shrine, and use the rope way. There are also lots of good places nearby for eating.

  • see Yahiko Park in late Autumn

This is a good time to see Yahiko Park which is a popular site for viewing the color changes of the leaves in Autumn. In Japan, people culturally notice, appreciate, and enjoy the changing of the seasons. So, in Autumn it's "koyou" (meaning the color changes of the leaves).

  • Ice Cream and Fish

While in Maki town, I always try to stop by Regalo, on old route 116 - almost a straight shot from Niigata city, maybe twenty minutes by car - for some really good home-style ice cream. There is also a Regalo in Bandai City, but the one in Maki always tastes fresher for some reason - I believe they make the ice cream there in Maki. The shop stands...

It takes about an hour to get to Maki from Niigata station. From Niigata station you'll see plenty of the city an as you get to Maki you'll watch it turn into farmland and countryside. If you have plans to transfer to see other areas near Maki, it is best to start off earlier in the morning as there can be a lot of travel time lag waiting for trains going to other areas from Maki station. The trains in the countryside don't travel as often as they do closer within Niigata city.

From Niigata City center it took about 2 1/2 hours to get to our destination at the Echigo brewery restaurant in Maki town (Makimachi). In total we spent 5 hours cycling there and back.

Equipment: It's a good idea to wear sunglasses to not only protect your eyes from the sun but also from the sand that's blowing around. We found it to be pretty windy most of our time going there. And Niigata is typically winding.
