Hiking up Kakuda takes only about 45 minutes to an hour and provides you with an unbelievably great view of Niigata's many rice fields and vast plain. Most foreigners I know have never climbed it and so they have no idea what they are missing. You can get to the foot of the mountain by car. In some areas it is also possible to get to the top by car, but if you do it that way you'll miss out on the adventure of the climb.
