The most active time a year in Niigata is the week preceding the Obon holiday. Usually starting around August 8th or 9th there are 3 main activities. The first day is the float-carrying event. The second day is the Bon-Odori (dance). The third day is Niigata fireworks.
On the day of the Niigata Bon-Odori, I highly recommend that you participate in or at least watch the Bon-Odori. If you'd like to try it you should go to the Niigata Friendship Center located in Honcho not too far from Furumachi. Get there before 5:00 so that you'll have time to put on the Yukata that they'll supply you with. The dance and the way the dance is done is special for this area. It's a fun social activity and it's amazing how many people turn out for this event. Niigata tends to have around 36,000 participants in this event. The women look beautiful. And everyone has fun as we drink and dance away.
The event begins a little after 6:30 and ends around 8:30.
Tip: Don't wear the Geta sandals. They hurt like hell!!!

Address: It takes place in Furumachi and Bandai
This place is gorgeous. Tall trees. Clean air. Not too many people. Peaceful. It's a really nice Japanese shrine to visit. One of the best, if not the best, I've seen so far. There are a bunch of souvenir shops in the area selling lots of Japanese toys and strange looking munchies.

This is a good place to get a free view of Niigata from above. It's a 31 storey building just by the river.

This interesting building was built as a centre for Niigata's music and cultural events. It is located close to the Performing Arts Centre, the Prefectural Memorial Hall and Hakusan Park.
