Tokyo Capsule Hotel Listing

by cheesecake17

These "hotel"s exist to shelter Salary/Men who have had more alcohol than they can handle, or some who has miss the last train and just can't make their way home. The tiny "rooms" resemble a cross between a futuristic sci-fi deep-sleep pod, and a coffin. They are definately not for the claustraphobic, and many don't take women, but if you have a chance....then don't miss the opportunity to stay overnight in one of these places. I found this off the beaten path accomodation...never been in one...but if any body is interested for cheap lodging and great experience

Fertility Goddess - Amano Uzumi

by dlandt

I found this little charmer over in Tokyo's Asakusa, and she is one of the only things I would actually say a person should see in that Hellish place. Women pray to Amano Uzumi when they want to have children, or for their children's well being and success. Like any other place to pray in Japan, there is a small offering box with no set minimum to donate. I just thought she was cute.

What would western petrolheads think of this?

by worldkiwi

When I was in Kawasaki (between Tokyo and Yokohama) in March 2005, my host took me to visit what I considered a rather novel and interesting temple complex. At this place drivers have their cars blessed in a car-blessing ceremony. In the picture you can see a large carpark in front of this temple. The cars are left there, while the drivers go inside to receive their blessings. The cars, in turn are blessed by the priest type person. Amazing; the things we never see, unless we're lucky enough to have a local guide!

Itoyama Park, Imabari, Shikoku Island.

by worldkiwi

On a rather grey, showery day, I was taken to Itoyama Park in Imabari by my gracious hosts to have a view of the impressive bridge leading to Honshu. The Shimanami-kaido makes an amazing sight in any weather, I imagine. The other impressive feature here is the sea strait below the bridge. The current rips along between the islands at an astounding rate and you can see whirlpools. Big ships seem to visibly strain against the currents as they heave along hundreds of metres below the park view point.

Yes - Japan does have quiet backwaters.

by worldkiwi

My 2005 business trip to Japan took me to the island of Shikoku and the city of Saijo. I made my base here for a couple of days. There is very little to do in Saijo. One afternoon I walked for miles and miles and found very little to entertain the mind or body! The town is very much a work-a-day place. This was a scene on the riverfront.

18th Century Village

In Kawasaki City, near Tokyo, you can visit the Nihon Minka-en, a re-created Japanese village. You can learn quite a bit about the people lived long ago., It's an interesting place to visit and you can probably see the whole place in 1 and 1/2 hours, depending on your pace.

Nomura Samurai House in Kanazawa

by Paul2001

Nomura Samurai House in Kanazawa is a well preserved house set up as it existed centuries ago when it would have been occupied by samuri. The house has belonged to the Nomura family for 10 generations. In the various rooms are the personal belongings of the Nomura samuri that date from the Edo Period. They include weaponry and clothing. On the grounds of the house is a lovely garden with a pond and minature waterfall. I found it to be very tranquil. The house is located in Nagamachi Samurai district of Kanazawa. The Nomura Samurain House is open daily from 8:30am to 5:30pm. A visit costs 500 yen.

Japanese Bevery Hills - Denenchofu

by SubieQ

Denenchofu - Tokyo Style Suburbia Strolling around the manicured avenues of Denenchofu, it's hard to believe this garden oasis is only 15 minutes away from the bustling, crowded Tokyo hub of Shibuya. But it's true. In Denenchofu, or "garden suburb," elegant homes nestled in well-tended gardens line every street. Behind the greenery, Japanese neo-classics, Edwardian villas, Swiss cottages and modern architectural designs offer flashes of individuality without breaking the harmony of the surroundings. Located in Ota Ward, along two of the railways that feed into western Tokyo, the Toyoko and Meguro lines, Denenchofu is a 15-minute train ride from Shibuya. History How did this tract of land become the premier suburb of metropolitan Tokyo? It was actually planned that way from the beginning. In the early 1900s, financier Eiichi Shibusawa bought, named and developed the area by emulating...

Fuji Go-Ko (Five Lakes Region)

Izu hantó, the Izu peninsula

by Maline

The Izu peninsula is located south of Tokyo on the east side of Honshu island. The peninsula is famous for its many hotspring resorts. The volcanic activity is abundant here, hence the many hot springs, or as they are called in Japanese, onsen.Atami, at the base of the peninsula is a very popular travel destination for people in Tokyo. We went down to Shimoda town all the way down the peninsula. From here we took some hot spring trips and also visited a marine center and got some lovely views of the ocean. The landscape of the peninsula itself is also amazing with the typical lsch green hills and the occasional steam from a spring rising above. The railroads on the Izu hantó are private so you cannot use your Rail Pass if you have one, but must buy special tickets. If you center your visit in Japan around Tokyo, but want a nearby getaway Izu should be perfect, it's close by and offers such...
