Take the 'Jigoku-tour' or 'Hell's tour', that the Beppu-touristorganisation organised and which will bring you along all famous hot-springs of the town and their strange variety of colours. From blood-red to poisonous green. Blubbering grey mudponds and high jumping geysers. To complete the tour you might enjoy a Japanese bathinghouse or go to the ones near the beach and let yourself be buried in the (they say) healthy mud).
Fondest memory: The amazement when I found out that the music I heared everywhere in the mainstreets of Beppu, came from the guther!!! In the pitts along the road were speakers that spread opera's and classic songs. Totally crazy!
Favorite thing: Beppu is the hot spring paradise. Try some of the typical Japanese Onsen. And do the Hell tour. Also it is a tourist ripoff it is still impressive.
Fondest memory: These are places where hot water rises to the surface, creating different effects, such as a geyser and bubbling mud.
Favorite thing: The other Beppu Jigoku is the Blood Pool Hell... The red color is due to the red clay at the bottom!!
Favorite thing: I've only visited Two Beppu Jigoku: This is the Tornato Hell which the hot spa water will spray out up to 50M high every 25 minutes...
