We were very surprised when we saw our first fruit shop in Beppu. For a number of reasons too:
1. It was winter so we were only expecting things like apples, oranges, pears & suchlike colder weather fruits;
2. So, lots of tropical type fruits;
3. Really big pieces of fruit, on average much bigger than we get at home; and
4. The prices were astronomical! (the master of understatement strikes again LOL!)
What to buy: Well, if I could have afforded to I probably would have bought a mango or two, a rockmelon (cantaloupe) and a paw paw (papaya).
However, when we looked at the mangos & did a quick currency conversion we figured out it wasn't really worth buying a mango for between 35 & 40 $Australian when we could buy something not quite as big, but I'm sure equally delicious for about $2 - 3.
So, if you find yourself in Beppu during the winter as we did and a piece of lovely looking tropical fruit takes your fancy, you'd better be well cashed (or credit carded) up!
What to pay: As mentioned above - PRICEY!
