The trams in Okayama start just outside of Okayama Station (across the street at the start of Momotaro Odori, the main street). There are two lines, one which ends at Higashiyama and the other ends at Sekibashi. For tourists, the trams bound for Higashiyama will probably be the most useful. To travel from the first to last station is no more than 250 yen, and most travelers will pay less than 200 yen, since Shiroshita is the most likely stop.
Here are some of the popular sites with their nearest tram stops (Higashiyama Train):
-Okayama Ekimae: Okayama Station, Okayama Ichibangai
-Shiroshita: Korakuen Garden, Okayama Castle, Okayama Orient Museum, Okayama Prefectural Museum of Art, Okayama Prefectural Museum, Yumeji Art Museum, Bizen Pottery Factory, Okayama Symphony Hall, Omotecho Shopping Street
-Kenchodori: Hayashibara Museum of Art (also easy to walk to from Shiroshita stop)
-Kadota Yashiki: Tokoen Garden
There are not so many cities in Japan with trams, but I think the trams contribute to the local atmosphere and charm. I enjoy seeing and riding them, and Okayama features many different styles of trams from one that feels like an ultra-modern restaurant to more traditional-looking trams. Although they're meant for transportation, I think they can also be considered a local attraction.

Outside on the station square you find the bus terminal. That's where the bus for the youth hostel departs from. Maybe you best ask in the tourist office in the station which bus you have to take. On entering the bus take a paper slip from the machine. As you get off the bus pay the exact fare according to the number on the paper and the fare board in the front of the bus.

Tram start from Okayama station (central or east gate). Using tram to Korakoen and Okayama castle is about 15 min, 180 yen for adult, 90 yen for child.

Bicycle is best choice to go around the city. You can ask Tourist Information Center in the okayama station central gate for the bicycle rent.
