In Tsuyama, on the "Sea Memorial/Festival" the people of Tsuyama go to Yokono Falls to celebrate and pay homage to the sea. This holiday was on July 21. There are no special rituals to perform at Yokono Falls, so it's not a "celebration" like a party, it is simply customary to visit the falls and perhaps eat at the restaurant.

In Japan, it is an honor to meet the Mayor of the city in which you are staying. If you have Japanese friends, it is not unusual for them to take you to visit the city mayor. This happened to me while I was there. Of course, it is expected that you look your best (wear appropriate clothing), but this is nothing to get nervous about. The mayor will likely ask questions about where you are from and what you like about his city. I was also presented with some nice information brochures and packets about Tsuyama City, as well as a pin and keychain. Be courteous to the mayor, as well as the Japanese friends who took you to there. They do this, because they themselves like to be invited to do this when they are in other cities. (If a Japanese person is visiting you, it would not be strange or a bad idea to allow them to meet your city's mayor)
