Favorite thing: The Okinawa-islands are a group of 57 islands in the south of Japan and Naha is a city of 300.000 inhabitants in the southwest of its main island. In Okinawa some of the heaviest battles of WW II took place between the American and Japanese troops. After WW II the US-troops used Okinawa as a base for their troops, this is why it is a bit more easy to find english speaking people or some english inscriptions there than in the rest of Japan.
Fondest memory: I made my tour on my own and payed a total of about 30 euros for taxi to and fro, (shared with 2 other people) monorail,
Suri-palace + Teahouse, lunch, icecream
US-$ or euros are not accepted in Okinawa !
There is NO bank at the pier when you come by ship
banks in the city are open between 09.00am and 03.00pm
The city is about 7 km from the cruiseport
Taxidrivers will mostly speak no english
Take a paper with the docks-adress written in Japanese with you
The tourist-info in port will give you that paper !
Shops are open : 09.00am till 07.00pm

Favorite thing: Though most older Okinawans speak a dialect known as Hogen (sp?), most understand Japanese. If you make the effort to learn some basic phrases, it will go a long way... Most exposure Okinawans have to Americans is to servicemen, who often don't do their country any favors as ambassadors, so try to not look like a Marine, soldier, squid or fly boy and you should be ok...

Favorite thing: I was SCUBA certified in Okinawa, and so far no other diving location has come close to offering what Okinawa has. Coral reef, exotice fish and warm water make it ideal and I understand why many Japanese nationals spend their vacations here...
Fondest memory: I spent alot of time on Camp Kinser, just north of Naha. You can find more pics at http://www.geocities.com/Pentagon/3611/kinser.htm

Naha is a small city. Can use public transport. Better not to drive by yourselves as there are bus lane in rush hours. If you mistakenly drive into it, you will be fined. So be careful.
