Tourist Traps

Okinawa's Gate 2 Kadena area
popeye68 profile photo
popeye68 2 reviews

All the hype about gate 2 kadena is just that... hype and drunken military braggards trying to impress their buddies. I was on gate 2 in 94-99 and I live here again now, yes it was a wild place then. Now that GWOT is going on there is a world wide crack down on human trafficking and most of the old bars that were the top rated spots are closed because they can't bribe enough people to get the visa's and passports for the girls to work in the bars. So if someone tells you about how mush sex theyr'e getting at gate 2 they just told you a good lie. If you are lucky enough to meet and have sex with some young Japanese girls in the gate 2 area, chances are most of Kadena has been there too. Hopefully you wont meet the girl who gives you something to remember her by (STD's). If you like 60 year old fat nasty Japanese women then whisper alley is the place for you. Thats about all the action still ongoing at gate 2. The only other old school attraction is the Banana show which features an old Japanese lady who performs tricks with her banana boyfriend which she usualy serves up the banana after the show for drunken soldiers who think its cool to eat the banana. The best way I have found to meet nice ladies in Okinawa is stay away from gate 2 area and go see the island. There are lots of lovely ladies wanting to meet guys and some enjoy sex but that does'nt mean you will have sex everytime you meet a Japanese lady in Okinawa. You have to do it the old fashioned way... work for it. Besides, who wants a wife or girlfriend that with the same tatoo on her butt as McDonalds..... "Billions and Billions Served". Gate 2 is a money pit and thats all. When the girls in the bar promise you sex, what they mean to say is they are going to screw you out of your money.

Unique Suggestions: Don't go.

Fun Alternatives: Get off base and see the island and do some tours and meet some real people.

What to Pack

Pack Lightly

Street in Okinawa City

Luggage and bags: There are laundries here so pack lightly. Our luggage was delayed 3 days from usa, so pack complete change of clothing in your carry-on

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: We were here during the rainy season, bring an umbrella, if not for the rain, to shade yourself from the sun. Comfortable walking shoes a must.

Toiletries and Medical Supplies: Bring all your own meds including any over -the - counter items you may need. Pharmacies do not sell all products that are available in usa.

Photo Equipment: We had a digital camera, but saw lots of Fuji photo stores that sold disposable camreas, film and offered film developing

Miscellaneous: the weater here was hot and humid, leave the shorts at home, crop pants work well.

Favorite thing: Okinawa has beautiful coasts, beaches and surrounding islands. It is difficult for a foreigner to travel alone because most of the people does not speak english.
There are many travel agencies. I used Jumbo Tours ( http://www.jumbotours.co.jp/en/ ). They have english speaking staff so you won't have any problems to communicate. They can arrange hotel, tickets and car.

Fondest memory: The landscapes are superb. Good for family trip if you visit the Aquarium or if you stay in one of their beaches. I went on december. The weather is variable. So you can have a rainy one today and a sunny and hot tomorrow. Rent a car and explore the roads. You also have nice spots for diving and surfing.
