by CO-Chad Sen-shu (southern Osaka-fu) is home to numerous onsens. Inunakiyama is famed as a sacred mountain retreat, but the numerous ryokan (inns) make it feel more like a tourist destination - albeit an uncrowded, out of the way one. It is deep in the mountains, surrounded by woods, and altogether a pleasant experience. Each ryokan has its own baths. Guests staying at the inn can use the baths, or you can come for the bath alone. I was told that accomodations and prices are roughly the same whichever you choose, so I won't give you the name of the one we visited. (OK, honestly, I forgot the name.) There was a regular bath, ro-ten-buro (outdoor tub), and whirlpool. When we arrived and asked the price, we were told Y800 for a bath, but when we said that sounded high, the manager immediately said OK, Y600. Address: Inu-naki yamaPhone: 0724-63-1212Directions: Take the bus from either Izumisano station (Nankai) or Hineno station (JR) to Inunakiyama bus stop. There are about five ryokan lining the road down the hill; pick whichever looks interesting to you.

by CO-Chad Osaka-fu is home to numerous onsen (natural hotsprings). Honoji no Sato, in the mountains above Kaizuka, is in a former elementary school. Facilities include a meeting center, restaurant, playground, gymnasium, miniature golf, and hiking course. The onsen itself features both regular bath and a ro-ten-buro (outdoor tub). Bathing in the garden, amid the trees is a great pleasure. It's also nice to cool your body in the fresh air between dips in the bath. Honoji no sato features excellent water - I'm not sure what minerals it contains, but it's very nice on the skin. A bath is Y600 for adults, children half price. The place is a bit difficult to reach by public transportation, but worth the effort. Address: Sobura, Kaizuka (near Sobura-guchi bus stop)Phone: 0724-78-8777Directions: From Kaizuka station (on the Nankai main line from Nanba), take Mizuma railway to Mizuma station. Then take the bus to Sobura-guchi. Honoji no Sato is about a three minute walk up the hill.Website: http://www.honojinosato.com/ (Japanese)

by CO-Chad Senshu (southern Osaka-fu) is home to numerous onsen (natural hot springs). Sun Hill Hannan is a hotel in southern Senshu, midway between Osaka and Wakayama. The baths feature a view of Osaka bay, Awaji island, and Kansai airport. The water is reputed to be high thoron, which is in turn reputed to cure whatever ails you. I was a bit disappointed that there was no ro-ten-buro (outdoor tub), and it was difficult to cool down in the hot moist air around the baths. There is a regular bath and a whirlpool (though the latter smelled suspiciously of chlorine). Hotel rooms start at Y6900 per night, or the bath alone is Y500. The hotel also features a driving range, tennis courts, and restaurant. Still, for a bath alone, I would recommend Honoji no Sato or Inunakiyama (both around Y600) as a nicer alternative. Telephone the hotel from Hakotsukuri station (Nankai) and they will pick you up. (Otherwise, it's a 30-40 minute walk up the hill.) Address: Hannan SkytownPhone: 0724-76-0888Directions: Take Nankai to Hakotsukuri station. Phone the hotel; they'll pick you up at the bus rotary in front of the station.Website: http://www.twin.ne.jp/~s-hannan/ (Japanese)

In Tajiri, the small town where I live, every Sunday from 6:00am to noon is the Asa-ichi, or morning market. Tajiri is a fishing town, and fresh fish and shellfish of all description are available. There are also fresh vegetables and prepared foods of various sorts. I highly recommend it, not only for reasonably priced and unbeatably fresh food, but also for people watching. The people of Kansai are famously open and friendly, and my neighbors in Tajiri are among the nicest people you'll meet anywhere. If you can't make it to Tajiri, there are great markets in other cities, too. Kishiwada, Izumisano, Kaizuka and other cities have their own markets. Address: Tajiri Ocean Front Community CenterDirections: In Rinku Port north, near Tajiri Sky Bridge. About a 20 minute walk south from Rinku Town station, or 10 minutes west from Yoshimi no Sato on the Nankai line.
