Amusement district, Dotonbori

by gogonicetrip

Dotonbori is Osaka's famous amusement district. It is a single shopping/restaurant street, running alongside the Dotonbori-gawa (canal), and stretches between the Dotonboribashi Bridge and the Nihonbashi Bridge. Dotonbori is officially a part of the Namba district of Osaka, south of Shinsaibashi.[Back to Osaka-fu]

Osaka Castle

by gogonicetrip

Osaka Castle is located in Chuo-ku Osaka. Originally called Ozakajo, it is one of Japan's most famous castles, and played a major role in the unification of Japan during the sixteenth century of the Azuchi Momoyama period. The castle is situated on a plot of land roughly one kilometer square. It is built on two raised platforms of landfill supported by sheer walls of cut rock, each overlooking a moat. The central castle building is five stories on the outside and eight stories on the inside, and built atop a tall stone foundation to protect its occupants from sword-bearing attackers.[Back to Osaka-fu]

Onsen: Inunakiyama

by CO-Chad

Sen-shu (southern Osaka-fu) is home to numerous onsens. Inunakiyama is famed as a sacred mountain retreat, but the numerous ryokan (inns) make it feel more like a tourist destination - albeit an uncrowded, out of the way one. It is deep in the mountains, surrounded by woods, and altogether a pleasant experience. Each ryokan has its own baths. Guests staying at the inn can use the baths, or you can come for the bath alone. I was told that accomodations and prices are roughly the same whichever you choose, so I won't give you the name of the one we visited. (OK, honestly, I forgot the name.) There was a regular bath, ro-ten-buro (outdoor tub), and whirlpool. When we arrived and asked the price, we were told Y800 for a bath, but when we said that sounded high, the manager immediately said OK, Y600.

Onsen: Honoji no Sato

by CO-Chad

Osaka-fu is home to numerous onsen (natural hotsprings). Honoji no Sato, in the mountains above Kaizuka, is in a former elementary school. Facilities include a meeting center, restaurant, playground, gymnasium, miniature golf, and hiking course. The onsen itself features both regular bath and a ro-ten-buro (outdoor tub). Bathing in the garden, amid the trees is a great pleasure. It's also nice to cool your body in the fresh air between dips in the bath. Honoji no sato features excellent water - I'm not sure what minerals it contains, but it's very nice on the skin. A bath is Y600 for adults, children half price. The place is a bit difficult to reach by public transportation, but worth the effort.

Asa-ichi (Morning Market)

by CO-Chad

In Tajiri, the small town where I live, every Sunday from 6:00am to noon is the Asa-ichi, or morning market. Tajiri is a fishing town, and fresh fish and shellfish of all description are available. There are also fresh vegetables and prepared foods of various sorts. I highly recommend it, not only for reasonably priced and unbeatably fresh food, but also for people watching. The people of Kansai are famously open and friendly, and my neighbors in Tajiri are among the nicest people you'll meet anywhere. If you can't make it to Tajiri, there are great markets in other cities, too. Kishiwada, Izumisano, Kaizuka and other cities have their own markets.

Dotonbori

by Nichola1

The Dontonbori area has a huge neon sign which all Japanese tourists want a photo in front of. It wont mean much to foreigners, but there are always lots of weird people to look at on the bridge, especially at night.
