No need, most hotels, ryokans, etc supply you with a yukata!
Most Japanese public bathrooms don't have soap or paper towels so it's a good idea to carry some sanitizer and a hand towel in your bag.
Most places for historical tours you will be taking your shoes off and so ones that do not lace and/or slip off and on are really the best.
Think summer and humid if you go in June, July or August. Salt tablets if you're subject to heat stroke. Bring lots of film as this city has a photo at every turn of the head.

If you do not understand Japanese, like me, a phrase book helps. Although a smile and pointing gets you by too!

Don't forget to bring your NEW shocks. You'll have to take your shoes off more times than you think and, sometimes, in the places you least expect it.
