lake hamana used to be separated from the sea by a strip of land, but in 1498 an opening to the sea was created by a great earthquake, which caused this piece of land to sink...

Pine trees were planted along the Old Tokaido by the Edo government.
A nearly-700m-long row of 340 pine trees is one of the longest pine-tree-lined roads in Shizuoka Prefecture.

Originally built during the Tenpo reign era (1830-1844), this secondary daimyo inn (waki honjin) still has its original drawing room with a window desk in the shoin style, and the other structures have all been restored to their original appearance.
Here one can see one of the FEW secondary daimyo inns that existed on the Tokaido route.
