Shimada is also famous for the origin of Shimada-mage, a traditional hair style for women during the Edo period.

It is said that yujo or prostitutes in Shimada shuku created the hair style.

Because Japan warm , humid climate is well suited to bamboo cultivation, bamboo is very pretty and is popular motif in traditional Japanese paintings .... Also is an integral part of Japanese life, as a decorative plant, building materials and numerous kinds of utensils for daily use.....

For years, people were told to run into the bamboo groves in the event of an earthquake because the bamboo's strong structure would hold the earth together...
