After you pay the fee of 300 yen, the beautiful gate you see in the shadow is the ROMON TWO-STORIED GATE.....The shrine is under remodeling for a few years now, so this gate has not been repainted but its just has beautiful..... Take a close look and the tablet Tosho-Daigongen is autographed by the 108th Emperor GOMIZUNOO... ROMON also mean IMPERIAL TABLET GATE..... Inside close rooms are 2 ZUISHINS (attendants) who sits on either side of the gate front part....and on the back are 2 KOMA-INUS (lion dogs )..... which are placed here in order to keep away the evil...... The story of Koma-Inu Koma-Inu are a pair of guardian dogs. They are placed to guard the shrine against all kinds of evil. Usually, the right-hand (facing the gate) statue is a lion with his mouth open and the left-hand statue is a dog, with his mouth closed. The dog’s features (open/close) originated from “a-hum” in Sanskrit, the literary language of ancient India. Most of their looks are ferocious to threaten an evil sprit, but some of them are lovely. There are four kinds of shapes, such as sitting down, bending forepaw down to rise his haunches, holding a ball under his foot, and having a baby at his feet. Koma-Inu is an ancient Egyptian lion originally. An image of a lion went over to India, and became Buddha’s protection beast. Then, it was introduced into Japan from the Korean Peninsula via China through the Silk Road. It was easier to photograph the back of the gate, the shadow of the big trees in the front made it very dark to photograph.... Look out for the STABLE AND WOODEN CARVED HORSE The stable was built in 1617..The roof is gabled and tile-roofed..The horse sculpture is copied from Ieyasu's favorite horse. Leave a Comment

This magnificent main shrine was built in GONGEN STYLE, the structure was recently repainted and you can see such vivid colors. Kunouzan-Toshogu is the origin of the other many toshogu. The same fundamental architectural style was copied by the NIKKO TOSHOGU which was built by the 3rd SHOGUN in 1636.. The interior of the front doors is the sanctuary.....the place down the stairs is caled ISHI NO MA....or stone hall(pic#5). How KUNOZAN TOSHOGU SHRINE got its name The shrine was built in 1617 in honour of the 1st Shogun TOKUGAWA IEYASU(1542-1616) He was born in OKAZAKI-castle in 1542 in the age of the civil war in Japan... With unceasing efforts, he succeeded in bringing the whole country under his sway and made great contributions to peace and culture of Japan today... In his last days after he retired from Shogunate, he lived in SUMPU castle ...He died in 1616 and was buried at KUNOZAN HILL...according to his will... The 2nd Shogun TOKUGAWA HIDETADA built the shrine for his father in 1617 in this place... The sacred tittle TOSHO-DAIGONGEN was granted to Ieyasu by the Imperial court...so the shrine is called KUNOZAN TOSHOGU.. Leave a Comment

Don't miss the small museum tucked away behind the main shrine.. This little museum owns about 2,000 of Tokugawa Ieyasu treasures , glittering swords, exquisite hanging scrolls , some of the finest examples of samurai armour....and Ieyasu's daily necessities....like his eye glasses, tea cups, slippers, even a pair of socks..:).. These daily necessities were used by Ieyasu in Sumpu Castle...They have been passed down for many generations in KUNO-ZAN TOSHO-GU SHRINE...... No pictures were allowed, but I sneak some.....The gold suit of armor is an original and was used by Ieyasu himself..its consider an IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROPERTY... other important artifacts are a TABLE CLOCK this was giving to him from spain in 1581...its also an IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROPERTY... A scroll of Tokugawa Ieyasu painted on it..... a SWORD made by SANETUNE its a NATIONAL TREASURE.... Leave a Comment

To your left of the Main Shrine is The Gate of Tokugawa Ieyasu's Mausoleum.....after you enter here the stone lantern dedicated by DAIMYO(feudal lords) stand in a row along the approach to the grave which is at the back of the Main shrine.... Everything changes after you cross that last door....all the glamour of the gold turn into a dull and peacefull atmosphere...... The mausoleum point to the west and stands 5.5 meter in height, 8 meters around and made of stone.... Leave a Comment

The TREASURE HOUSE was next to the Dancing hall....this building was painted and the style takes after Shosoin which is in Todaiji temple... Just before entering the side of the main hall you will see THE HIE SHRINE enshrined in here is the Ooyamakui-no-mikoto who protects the Kuno mountain. The details on this shrine was worth some time to admire..... Leave a Comment

by inamacho There's a very nice hiking route in the southern part of Izu Peninsula. It is in Kawazu Town. Kawazu-Nanadaru(Kawazu 7 falls) has great scenes remind us of Japanese-style gardens. When you walk, you'll see 7 beautiful falls, Odaru, Deaidaru, Kanidaru, Shokeidaru, Hebidaru, Ebidaru, and Kamadaru. The photo shows Shokeidaru and the statue of izu-no-odoriko. Hyottoko and okame by cheesecake17 On your way to the shrine, there were so many interesting little things...These mask were located at a tradional paper store on the way.. The mask is call Hyottoko is an abbreviation to "Hi Otoko," or "Fire Man," from the idea that this character blows fire from a bamboo tube that is why his mouth shaped as it is... The female equivalent is known as "okame," (the mask on the right) Their dance is considered comical, and is said to have been used as long as 900 years ago to amuse troops fresh from battle.
