main shrine

This magnificent main shrine was built in GONGEN STYLE, the structure was recently repainted and you can see such vivid colors.

Kunouzan-Toshogu is the origin of the other many toshogu. The same fundamental architectural style was copied by the NIKKO TOSHOGU which was built by the 3rd SHOGUN in 1636..

The interior of the front doors is the sanctuary.....the place down the stairs is caled ISHI NO MA....or stone hall(pic#5).

How KUNOZAN TOSHOGU SHRINE got its name

The shrine was built in 1617 in honour of the 1st Shogun TOKUGAWA IEYASU(1542-1616) He was born in OKAZAKI-castle in 1542 in the age of the civil war in Japan...

With unceasing efforts, he succeeded in bringing the whole country under his sway and made great contributions to peace and culture of Japan today...

In his last days after he retired from Shogunate, he lived in SUMPU castle ...He died in 1616 and was buried at KUNOZAN HILL...according to his will...

The 2nd Shogun TOKUGAWA HIDETADA built the shrine for his father in 1617 in this place...

The sacred tittle TOSHO-DAIGONGEN was granted to Ieyasu by the Imperial court...so the shrine is called KUNOZAN TOSHOGU..

gate to the mausoleum

To your left of the Main Shrine is The Gate of Tokugawa Ieyasu's Mausoleum.....after you enter here the stone lantern dedicated by DAIMYO(feudal lords) stand in a row along the approach to the grave which is at the back of the Main shrine....

Everything changes after you cross that last door....all the glamour of the gold turn into a dull and peacefull atmosphere......
The mausoleum point to the west and stands 5.5 meter in height, 8 meters around and made of stone....

back side of the karamon gate

The KARAMON GATE CHINESE -STYLE GATE, was the most impressive work of art....the carving on this door was super.....and it colours just freshly painted ......so much detail.....

The black color is japanese lacquer, and the gold is real gold.....the sun was shinning on this door my pictures got to exposed.......best to take pictures early morning or on an overcast day...

Picture #2 , shows the closest you can get to the front of this gate......my 1st picture is taken from the back....still the details from either side is great....

The 2nd pic..shows a lantern called KARADO=TORO CHINESE -STYLE COPPER GARDEN LANTER which is an IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROPERTY.....and again all the structures here are CULTURAL PROPERTIES..

The TREASURE HOUSE was next to the Dancing hall....this building was painted and the style takes after Shosoin which is in Todaiji temple...

Just before entering the side of the main hall you will see THE HIE SHRINE enshrined in here is the Ooyamakui-no-mikoto who protects the Kuno mountain.

The details on this shrine was worth some time to admire.....

Separation of the two religion........

drum tower
2 more images

KUNO-ZAN TOSHOGU was ORIGINALLY built in the mixed style of SHINTOISM and BUDDHISM...

But after the Shogunate government came to its end, the NEW government led by the EMPEROR, ordered the separations of the 2 religions and some Buddhist style structures were removed or remodeled...

The remants of the BUDDHIST STYLE can still be seen in various locations.....

For example, The THE DRUM TOWER... This was formerly a BELL-TOWER, but as a result of the prohibition of both workship between BUDDHISM and SHINTOISM, the bell was replaced by a DRUM....

Also.....you can see the vacant lot of what used to be A 5 STORIED PADOGA, which was build on order from the 3rd Shogun Iemitsu(Tokugawa Ieyasu's grandson). At that time, the pagoda was 30m in height but it was pulled down in 1873 for the same reason.....

Important cultural property
4 more images

Don't miss the small museum tucked away behind the main shrine..

This little museum owns about 2,000 of Tokugawa Ieyasu treasures , glittering swords, exquisite hanging scrolls , some of the finest examples of samurai armour....and Ieyasu's daily necessities....like his eye glasses, tea cups, slippers, even a pair of socks..:)..

These daily necessities were used by Ieyasu in Sumpu Castle...They have been passed down for many generations in KUNO-ZAN TOSHO-GU SHRINE......

No pictures were allowed, but I sneak some.....The gold suit of armor is an original and was used by Ieyasu himself..its consider an IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROPERTY...

other important artifacts are a TABLE CLOCK this was giving to him from spain in 1581...its also an IMPORTANT CULTURAL PROPERTY...

A scroll of Tokugawa Ieyasu painted on it..... a SWORD made by SANETUNE its a NATIONAL TREASURE....

Strawberry Picking

stone wall strawberry

Instead of heading back to the city the way you came, walk down the 1159 steps which lead off from the shrine to the coast below.

The strawberry farms at the bottom are only open december to march but anyone in need of more refreshment should head for the shops at the foot of the steps, which sell everything from locally-produced strawberry juice to ice cream.

In Ishigaki (stone wall) Strawberry Farm along the coast of Kuno-zan Beach facing Suruga Bay, you can enjoy strawberry picking.

The strawberries in the green houses grow fast in the earth stuffed between stone bricks so that they are exposed to a lot of sunshine beside some extra heat from the stones.

Therefore they are just ripe and ready for nibbling on the spot.

Strawberry picking season is between January and May.

and generally cost 1500 yen for all you can eat

Shizuoka Festival is held on the 1st weekend of April for 3 days....And on the first Saturday and Sunday of April.

The parade, which features a noble woman accompanied by about a hundred retainers, provides a glimpse of what life was like in the Edo period.
