When in Shimoda we stopped to see the place where Admiral Perry first landed on Japan in the 1800's and the site of the first US Consulate in Japan. The website below will give you a short history of Townsend Harris, first consul to Japan, and also Perry's expedition.

You won't be dissappointed!

If you go up to the top of Katsuragi-san (Mt. Katsuragi) by ropeway, you can enjoy a spectacular view from the observatory including Mt. Fuji. Unfortunately, I couldn't see the whole of Mt. Fuji as there were clouds covering the mountaintop. But still, the landscape was amazing and was worth paying 1,220 yen (both ways for the ropeway).

hamamatsu castle

really neat castle! The castle is also called 'Shusse-jyo' ( 'Castle of Promotion' in direct translation) because, starting from this castle, Ieyasu increased his power, and eventually ruled over Japan. Its castle tower has been reconstructed after World War‡U. Its inside displays historical documents.

hot springs are most abundant in all of japan. people love to bathe in them and claim medicinal benefits. I am not sure of this, but the onsen (hot spring bath) left my skin soft and i felt relaxed and revived (if this can happen!)i went to an onsen on hamana, at empire hotel. it was 1200??or about 12 us dollars. people go naked here, as it isnt thought of as sexual. but if you prefer you can wear swimsuit or a towel, you wil be regarded as a silly foreigner but they will also understand you dont like being naked! dont wear shoes inside!you get a locker for your belongingthe baths i went to were both in and outside, with waterfalls, plants, bubbles, massage jets, sitting area, charcoal water (its not black but has a bit of charcoal in it i guess thats good?) a sauna, and a freezing cold pool to cool off in. also a shower.dont bring soaps into the baths and makre sure you aren:t dirty! no...

Endlessly descending on a zig-zag gravel path is more troublesome than going directly up!
