Kinokuniya: English language books

  • The Kinokuniya chain is guaranteed to have a stock of English language books and magazines. It's a nationwide chain, so there's bound to be one nearish to where you are if you are in a reasonably sized city.

Hyaku en (100 yen) shop: Bargains at 100 yen stores

  • Ah the famous 100 yen shop!
Bargain stores exist all over the world, but I think the Japanese are the world-leaders in them.
100 yen is roughly 88 US cents, and while I don't think everything is that cheap, these stores sell a whole range of cheap but useful stuff.
I picked up a basic calculator, notebook and a small traditional-style plate which could pass as a gift. 100 yen stores are especially good for pens and stationery (Hello Kitty etc) which make good gifts. They also sell toiletries and cosmetics.

  • This is the only place where we can afford to buy some clothes. Prices are affordable here with a fleece jacket costing less than US$13 and a pair of jeans for US$18. Quality is great and the range of colours is mind-boggling.

The branch in Kyoto (Nishiri market) is small but the one in Tokyo (Ginza) is 5 storeys high with men, women, children's clothes and shoes.

Get ready for big crowds on weekends

Women, listen up - Japanese skincare brand like Shiseido is so much cheaper in Japan. The airport is a great place to stock up before you leave Japan.

  • Directions: Uniglo (Ginza) : stop at Ginza station and walk up to the Ginza square (where lotsa of neon billboards are). Uniglo is close to the square

In regards to shopping, Japan is well up to par with Western standards, and you will find several international stores and brands here. There are numerous pedestrian and strip malls. My major frustration was finding a decent "Japanese" souvenir; most tourist sites I visited only had edible or consumable souvenirs as that is the preference of domestic travelers.

...: WHAT TO BUY IN EACH CITY
  • Tip Rating:

  • Almost each city in Japan is famous for something. Akashi is famous for octopus. Hamamatsu is famous for eel. Okayama is famous for peaches. Aomori is famous for apples. Hokkaido is famous for dairy products.
To find out what is famous in the city/town that you are visiting (if there is no information center), go to the markets & shopping streets & look to see what is sold in abundance. Or look for landmarks (like a HUGE peach or a HUGE apple sitting on the roadside).
And it`s not just food. Himeji tongs are famous. Fukuoka hakata dolls & takatoriyaki pottery is famous. Kyoto oil blotting tissue (for you ladies!!) is famous.
Try to buy something that is famous in the city/town that you are visiting in. They can be great souvenirs!!

This street had the best japanese shops!
And most importantly not aimed at tourists. At the end of the street you can also find great cafes and internet cafes.
