Shops and Malls by the thousands !!!

by cloed

I did not know what to expect when i went to Japan but the quantity of shops was not something i had ever expected, even trying to explain it is difficult, if i use Nagoya train station as an example - Nagoya is i think the 4th largest city in Japan so the train station there is big - in it there is 2 large department stores each with 9 floors and also about 100 shops in and around the station. if you go down to the subway there is 100's more shops that creatate their own town, im told its possible to get from one area of the city to anyother with out comming up for air !!. while 70% of these shops are womans clothes an other 20% sell sweets. For a country of tiny people they eat an amazing amount of cakes and sweets, there is a tradition that if you travel anywhere you are expected to bring back a present for your friends and family - let me tell you you will never be able to use the...

Tokoyo Hands: Tokoyo, Japan

This store is reasonably priced in an otherwise expensive city. There are many items made in Japan and you are able to get gifts for family and friends that are Unique to the country. I especially like my black briefcase that I purchased there. There are many to choose from.

Teramachi /Sanjo / Shinkyogoku arcades: Shop-a-holic heaven KYOTO

by Pixiekatten

Alleys running left, right, crossing eachother, crossing the street, then left, then right again. It never ends and nor does the shops and boutiques. Clothes, caps, toys, bargain stores, second hand, cafes, restaurants, bars... to infinity. For her. For him. For everyone! 100 yen shops are perfect for shopsticks, bowls, plates etc. Ceramic and plastic. Also toys and those last minute gifts for home. Any typical souvenir can be found here... cheap cheap cheap!!!There are some really cool clothes shops. Sometimes so trendy they become weird. Just beware all the 2nd hand shops. The prices are sometimes higher than new stuff in other shops!!! Look around first. Then shop!! Just an advice. When it comes to food, look out for Mr Young Men. Very taste Okonomiyaki!!!

Few Ideas

by cheesecake17

what to bring back from japan as gifts...well ...here are some suggestion... check the candy section of the nearest drug store or supermarket. You might want to try some of these yourself before buying for others, but consider grapefruit-flavored gum, yogurt-flavored lozenges, and caramel candy in a box labeled totally in Japanese, giving no hint of what it contains...There’s also Pinky, small plastic boxes filled with tiny mints. Colorful posters for current attractions are usually available in hotel lobbies. These 8 by 11.5-inch prints can be matted and framed at home....and its free..:)Some of the neatest little items are the omamori amulets available at many shrines and temples. They’re small bags the size of a tea bag, usually made of a rich brocade cloth. Some are embroidered with the type of good fortune they will bring, others with the name of the shrine or a scene. Inside the...

A Traditional japanese toy..

by cheesecake17

The KITE or tako, is another great gift...in my opinion... Kites came to Japan from China in the Heian period (794-1185), and were wildly popular during the Edo period. They come in a variety of shapes, including square and hexagonal, and are often decorated with traditional pictures and patterns. One kind of kite popular among merchant families in the old days was known as a yakkodako. These kites were made to resemble human figures with their arms outstretched in comical poses. Merchants had the kites made in the likeness of their servants.Kite-flying was a major pastime .. Communities launched enormous kites, sometimes over a hundred square meters (about 1,090 square feet) in size. Kite wars, in which players tried to sever their opponents' kite strings, were also popular and still practice in these days..like the HAMAMATSU KITE FESTIVAL
