UNIQLO: Smart, Casual, and Sporty Clothes

by traveldream

This shop sells men and women smart, casual, sporty clothes - including socks, gloves, etc. depends on the season - and also several types of bags and passport/camera wallets. They are relatively cheap in Japan. Note: There are also Uniqlo stores in UK, launched in Autumn 2001. Clothes, bags. Watch for discounts - you'll save money.

Arcade style shopping street: Asakusa & Nakamise

by kop-queen

Visit the Asakusa Kannon Temple and then enjoy the picturesque downtown district of Asakusa. Traditional gifts and foods in market style surroundings. Nothing very expensive and you can haggle over the prices.

Various: Akihabara - Electronics galore

by kop-queen

The whole area is full of shops selling electronics many sold duty free (remember to take your passport). Any electronic device ever made. Be careful with prices as there may not be much to be saved against UK prices though we did save £40+ on a iPod nano. You can also haggle over what you are prepared to pay.

Uniglo: Made in Japan

by Restless-in-kl

This is the only place where we can afford to buy some clothes. Prices are affordable here with a fleece jacket costing less than US$13 and a pair of jeans for US$18. Quality is great and the range of colours is mind-boggling.The branch in Kyoto (Nishiri market) is small but the one in Tokyo (Ginza) is 5 storeys high with men, women, children's clothes and shoes.Get ready for big crowds on weekends Women, listen up - Japanese skincare brand like Shiseido is so much cheaper in Japan. The airport is a great place to stock up before you leave Japan.

Hyaku en (100 yen) shop: Bargains at 100 yen stores

by natashac

Ah the famous 100 yen shop!Bargain stores exist all over the world, but I think the Japanese are the world-leaders in them.100 yen is roughly 88 US cents, and while I don't think everything is that cheap, these stores sell a whole range of cheap but useful stuff.I picked up a basic calculator, notebook and a small traditional-style plate which could pass as a gift. 100 yen stores are especially good for pens and stationery (Hello Kitty etc) which make good gifts. They also sell toiletries and cosmetics.

100 Yen Shops: Bargain shopping in Japan?

by worldkiwi

100 Yen shops can now be found all over Japan. These discount stores can be a bit of a lifesaver for travellers wishing to save their money, but needing extra clothes. On both my trips to Japan, when I've needed extra clothes to suit the climatic conditions a bit better, I've found cheap and good quality items like hats, t-shirts, etc... in these stores. Not everything in store is 100 Yen. Items that cost more will be labelled, but will still prove cheaper than "fashion brand" items in the big stores.

Narita Airport: Inexpensive Souvenirs - rare & unique

by vyxxyn

At either terminal of Narita Airport, just before the gates. "UMEBOSHI-KONBUCHA" which is "Seaweed Tea flavoured with plum". This tea has a very delicate yet distinct flavour which will linger in your mind forever because it is just SO rare. More rare than the Matcha (Special Brew Green Tea).Seaweed tea isn't something the average Japanese will have come across, as it is normally home-brewed and served during very special occasions for the upper class Japanese like grand wedding receptions and birth celebration of firstborn son. Pure Seaweed Tea is extremely rare, and I've tried in vain to get them in Tokyo shops and in shops throughout Hokkaido. You can try getting pure Seaweed Tea, using the name "Nori-Cha". Trouble is not many people will have come across it and will mistake it for a soup additive which is clearly a different product. A box like this containing 25 tea bags costs...

Narita Airport shops: Ideal souvenirs - inexpensive & delightful

by vyxxyn

Any shop in Narita Airport. They're priced at a-third here compared to most cities elsewhere. "Mochi" are small bite-sized sweet dessert/snacks made of a coating of flavoured rice starch and a soft core. Normally the coating and the core are of different textures and flavours. Flavours range from strawberry yogurt to red bean to green tea. The bean-flavoured ones are usually pasty and have real beans (red, black or white) in the core. The box pictured here is priced at about 200 Yen. Larger boxes with different flavour varieties normally cost about 1,500 Yen.

"Lawsons", "Kiosk", "7-Eleven" & others: Creative food - Snacks

by vyxxyn

When it comes to food, the Japanese has them all. Not just in terms of great taste, interesting innovations as well. You'll never go hungry in this country, unless you have run out of money - which is quite likely. There's beef jerky, pork jerky, and get this... SEAWEED JERKY !!! 105 En

100 yen stores: Japanese style curtain....."NOREN"

by cheesecake17

Originally "Noren" were widely used in Japan as restaurant and shop curtains. A Noren hung in a doorway signaled that the shop was open for business. Noren are now widely used in contemporary home and business decor, enhancing any room or doorway. Noren are split in the middle so you can walk right through, and have a closed top seam to insert a wooden or bamboo dowel for hanging. You can see in the picture a variety of colors and designs...sold at 100 yen stores...
