All of them - Have Fun spending!: Funky Harajuku

by naruto

Harajuku is Tokyo's mecca for coolness. Many young people flock here for the excitement and its fashionable shops. Harajuku is where fads are started before it spread across the city and then across the country, and then parts of the world.Laforet is 5 floors of the coolest, hippiest, most happening street fashion anywhere else. What they have on offer surpasses even the most avant-garde in US and Europe's fashion cities. Only the most daring, most fashion-conscious will be able to carry off the clothes and accessories offer in the boutiques here. For those that prefer it safe albeit staid, there is always the huge 3-storey GAP across the street.Boutiques and cafe line the streets on Takeshita Dori and Omote Sando, Brahms Alley and Meiji Avenue. There are also the 100yen shops, puri-kura shops and many others selling knick-knacks and cute accessories along the narrowness of Takeshita...

vending machine: the wonder of vending machines

by chaistarr

usually food and drink. but can be magazine or condom or anything, so i have heard. in my three days in tokyo i only encountered drinks, including beer! and hot drinks! (brownie point for japan) ciggarettes and snacks. but these machines are everywhere! the convenience store is kinda new in japan (called combeni) but they have ampm, 7 11 just like in usa. With one vending machine per an estimated 23 people (according to the Japan Vending Machine Manufacturers Association), Japan has one of the world's highest vending machine densities. Machines can be found all over the cities, smaller towns and even in the countryside. Almost none of them are vandalized or otherwise non-functional. hot drinks are great to buy in winter

...: WHAT TO BUY IN EACH CITY

by heywinks

Almost each city in Japan is famous for something. Akashi is famous for octopus. Hamamatsu is famous for eel. Okayama is famous for peaches. Aomori is famous for apples. Hokkaido is famous for dairy products. To find out what is famous in the city/town that you are visiting (if there is no information center), go to the markets & shopping streets & look to see what is sold in abundance. Or look for landmarks (like a HUGE peach or a HUGE apple sitting on the roadside). And it`s not just food. Himeji tongs are famous. Fukuoka hakata dolls & takatoriyaki pottery is famous. Kyoto oil blotting tissue (for you ladies!!) is famous.Try to buy something that is famous in the city/town that you are visiting in. They can be great souvenirs!!

anywhere, everything: japan can be cheap really!

by chaistarr

Electronic Goods shopping in Akihabara.

by A2002

Many guidebooks state that Akihabara is the cheapest place to shop for electronic goods in Tokyo. To me, it is not much of a savings though. It is indeed amazing and interesting to walk around Akihabara to see the abundant cutting edge products. However, I think it is not that cheap to buy in Akihabara. For example, I bought a digital camera in a shop in Ueno that cost at least JPY10,000 less than in Akihabara. Perhaps that place is meant for tourists.
