Canal City is one of the most recent developments in
Fukuoka -- it is based on an American shopping mall and while limited due to tight land restrictions it has a large array of shops, cinemas, restaurants, and things outlandish.
Next to it is the Hyatt Hotel which has a great selection of restaurants including my personal favorite, Gobi Q, a Mongolian BBQ that fries up some great food. You could pick a different selection of meats, vegetables and sauces and go there day after day, and still taste something new. Cost is about 1200 yen for a weekday lunch.

During spring season, you can enjoy cherry blossoms viewing. We Japanese likes to see them with sake and karaoke.
Cherry blossoms is "sakura" in Japanese.
Sakura bloom are 3/20 to 4/20 I think, it depends on place. I think day time sakura and night time sakura is so different. Which prefer? Just check out your self! It is really beautiful.

    Miyajima Island
    by mad4travel
Mjiyajima island is a short train ride south of Hirsoshima at the southern end of Kyushu.

The main feature of the island is the Itsukushima Shrine which is a UNESCO Wolrd Heritage site

Itsukushima Shrine was built by Taira no Kiyomori, a powerful figure in 12th century Japan.

His original construction laid the groundwork for the magnificent collection of shrine buildings there today.

The architectural arrangement of these buildings incorporates the shinden-zukuri style of the Heian period (794-1184), but its placement on the water, beautifully framed by the mountain in the background is the real plus.

The most famous part of the shrine is the much photographed Tori gate.

Also on the island is a variety of suprisingly untacky souvenir shops and some good restaurants.

Few cars are allowed on the island so it makes it a very peaceful and tranquil place (if you go early and avoid the tourists!)

    Gion by night

As you might have understood from reading the introduction to my Japan pages I absolutely love the Kansai region. And most of all I adore Kyoto. I have fallen in love with Gion, the geisha district.

Narrow alleys, traditional houses, cute shops and lovely teahouses. If you're lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a geisha or a maiko (an apprentice). To experience the traditional Gion, stroll along Hanami-koji, a street lined by beautiful old buildings, teahouses and restaurants. Minamiza kabuki theater is located in Gion. Another must is to visit the Yasaka Shrine, also known as Gion Shrine.

  • Directions: Gion can be reached by bus from Kyoto Station in about 20 minutes. Take number 100 and 206 and get off at Gion bus stop. The closest train stations are Shijo Station on the Keihan Line and Kawaramachi Station on the Hankyu Line.

AKITA, It is a prefecture (Americans: think "State") in the north of Japan's main island. It's a part of Japan outside of the main urban commerce and tourism loop.
Accordingly, it is a place with much natural beauty and old Japanese culture.

  • Mannequins of royal women doing.... something - Japan

    doing.... something

Himeji Castle was built in 1346 but has never fired a shot in anger, nor been attacked at any time in its history. The castle has been used as more of an administrative center than anything else, though it also provided living quarters for the samurai lords of the area.

Inside, you will see many things that may interest you, such as the women's quarters, closed off by heavy solid doors which were closed and barred by night, with sentries posted outside just in case any of that there hanky panky would... never mind. There are also religious, storage, and bureaucratic areas as well as a suicide veranda.

Displayed in one photo are the eaves of a roof, which you can't see but are decorated with Christian crosses as a useful ward against evil. That section was built a bit later. Some of the lords were literary celebrities of their day wityh their works on display, and there are displays of Japanese military history on just about every floor.

I do recommend you wear loafers since the Japanese do not allow shoes in the castle and the slippers they provide are way too small to be comfortable for most caucasian men. The heels of the slippers only come to the arches under my feet so I shucked them for a less painful stockingfoot experience.

Trains for Kameoka depart from both Kyoto or Osaka. Here get the riverboat to Arashiyama. The trip takes approx 2hrs. The boats seat about 20 people and are powered by three boatmen with poles and oars.

The Hozugawa riverboat ride that winds down 16 kilometers of the Hozu River in Kyoto, from Kameoka to Arashiyama, offers breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains as well as a thrilling passage among narrow gorges and large boulders.

A chance to meet japanese people. I was only westerner on the boat and got really good taken care of. I didnt understand a word what the guide were saying but they sure fed me Japanese sweets! :)

Boats depart daily between 9:00 and 15:30 (between 10:00 and 14:30 from December to mid March). Cost: 3900 Yen per person.

  • Address: Ask at any Kansai TIC
  • Directions: The boats depart about a 10-15 min walk from Kameoka station, follow signs.

Visit the Golden Pavilion in Kyoto - Kinkakuji

    The golden Pavilion

Kinkakuji isn't the original structure by any means. It has been destroyed several times, with the last being in 1950 when a mad monk burned it down. Back in medieval times, the building was the center of a religious complex which now doesn't really exist. Its primary claim to fame being that it is covered in ghold, the pavilion itself is of modest size, but is located in immaculately kept grounds. Located in the middle of a pond so well tended it looks like it could be a Japanese garden itself, the best time for viewing is as the sun is setting. I'm no expert, but they say each story represents a different style of Japanese architecture.

Hiroshima, the Japanese city famous for all the wrong reason! This is where the first atomic bomb in the world was dropped during WWII at 8.15 on Aug. 6, 1945.

Now, tourists from all over the world visit this city to see its miraculous reconstruction. When elsewhere in the world others are still fighting for territorial rights & whatever disputes that's been ongoing, Hiroshima should serve as a reminder that history must never repeats itself!

THE ATOMIC BOMB DOME has been registered as UNESCO World Heritage site in 1996 to convey the message of the terrible disaster of the 1st use of atomic weapon in human history. The dome is the remains of the former Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall.
