Tokyo Time

by S_K_I_

Ride the trains! Ok, you will have to do that anyway, but they are really nice to use. Eat as much as you can, the food here is crazy and crazy good. If you are in Tokyo find some mochi street vendor. It's a rice block that they heat up and looks kind of like a marshmallow. Yakitori, sushi, shabu shabu and yakiniku are a must. If you are at a bar restaurant ask for the nomihodie. It means all you can drink! Anywhere from $15-30 for 1.5-2 hours. That's a deal!Mt Fuji or Fujisan is not that far from Tokyo. It's worth the fairly easy climb and the view is amazing when you watch the sunrise!

Takayama

by FluffyDice

Takayama is also a place that if you want to see temples and historical stuff, you won’t find any shortage of them here. They’re everywhere and you can do a walking trail that’ll take you through tons of ‘em. We walked for miles, saw tons of great things and had a really good time. Takayama also has this symbolic character of the area, kind of like a mascot that they call Sarabobo. It’s this red thing that represents something but I can’t remember what. Another thing Takayama / Gifu is known for are the hot springs. These hot springs are there to soothe your bones, feet, muscles, etc. and they work a treat. The water has healing properties in them so, naturally, I sat my feet in and rocked the hot springs for the few days I was there. Was total bliss and highly relaxing after a hard days hiking. Note: You won’t be able to go into some of the paying hot springs if you have tattoos that...

Shirakawago

by FluffyDice

Shirakawago is in Gifu prefecture. We booked a few days in a place called Takayama and Shirakawago is a bus ride away from there. If you get the chance, I totally recommend going. This place is like a tourist town but people do still live there rockin’ it old-school. The day we went, it was raining yet hot (it was the Summer) and I honestly think if it was sunny and no rain, it wouldn’t have had half the atmosphere or have been half the experience that it was. The weather certainly added something to it. At one stage we climbed to the top of this mountain to look down at the town below. Dude, we were in the freakin’ clouds! Seriously! That’s how high up we were. Totally amazing. We went inside one of the houses to have a look at what they were like inside. Things were most certainly different back then. No XBOX’s, no records and CDs, nothing that we take for granted now. I loved it...

Tokyo Tower

by FluffyDice

Tokyo Tower. If you go to Tokyo, you MUST visit this place. It’s a tower that is used for radio and TV stuff but you’re allowed to go in the elevator up god knows how far and you can see for miles. It’s amazing. The view from up there is incredible and when you’re looking down at the city of Tokyo, you start thinking that it looks like a model city. Like something you can build. It doesn’t look real. Whilst in the tower, you can also check out a wax museum and a rock shop. There’s obviously food and stuff in there too. It’s well worth the climb so I totally recommend this. You seriously don’t realise just how big Tokyo is until you climb this thing. You can also see Mt Fuji in the distance on a clear day. Also, it’s open til 9pm so if you go up late at night, and knowing how insanely cool Tokyo looks at night with its colourful lights and stuff, you can just imagine how unreal this would...

Kamakura

by FluffyDice

This place is a must see. We got there and went walking and walking is something you’ll do a lot of while here so make sure you take comfy shoes. We went into this tunnel thing and ended up in this small temple-ish type thing where people were washing money. Yeah, seriously... they were washing their money in the hope that it would bring them wealth. I did it cos like how many times are you going to wash money voluntarily (accidentally washing your money that you left in your jeans pocket doesn’t count)? So we washed money and made some wishes. My friend said there was a hiking trail through the mountains to get to the Daibutsu or we could walk the roads. I chose mountains. I think the hiking trail was 1.7 kilometres long but this is a perfect example of one of those “I never thought I’d be doing this” moments. The hiking was good and the views were awesome. It really took the energy out...

go up to the top of the buildings

by madar

In bigger cities, where you can find high buildings, and you have time, it is worth the effort to try to get up to the top of these office or other buildings. not just for the nice view of the city, but for the restaurants also. Here we were in Gifu city, in a top of a deparment store. Or one more picture, taken in Tokyo, from a hotel window.

Feel the vice-like grip of gambling, Japanese styl

by Mr.Sparkle

I think no trip to Japan would be complete without checking out Pachinko, the pinball gambling activity that’s all the rage. You don’t have to really go in and spend your whole day like some Japanese people, but certainly worth a look to see how the other half live.

I'll flip you... flip you for real!

by Mr.Sparkle

When you’re in Japan why not take in some kind of martial arts. Yeah, it is easier said than done, but if you look around you just might find fighting. I found these guys in the picture at the Toyama university graduation ceremony.
