Cherry Blossom Viewing (Hanami)

by Teamfast

Cherry Blossoms(Sakura)bloom around the springtime.Sakura are line up rows after rows in parks, river banks, castle moats, and lakes, making it a truly beautiful sight.Sakuras last for about a week:Samurai saw them a similarity to their own lives, they end so suddenly, with their totl commitment to the shoguns. The first ones appear in Okinawa in February, the spreads across Japan, reaching Hokkaido in early May.The best place to see them are in Mt.Yoshino near Kyoto,Ueno Park in Tokyo and Hirusaki in Amori prefecture.Prefect for sedate viewers, lovers, and people who wanna fun drinking sake, singing and relaxing.

Fireflowers

by Mr.Sparkle

You'll be hard pressed to find another country that does fireworks as big as Japan. If you're in town during a festival you should brave the crowds and see the fireworks, or as they call them here, hanabi (fireflowers)!

Tokyo Disneyland

by FluffyDice

A day pass costs you 5,200 yen (about $55 AUS). As soon as you enter, you see characters from Disney movies and you can get photos with them all, including Mickey & Minnie. Disneyland is very crowded which meant long lines. I rode on the spinning tea-cups, ate food at the Queen of Hearts’ Banquet Hall (the chocolate mousse comes on a complimentary Mickey Mouse plate), met Mary Poppins, saw a parade, watched the big finale of the fireworks over Cinderella’s castle, and had an amazing time. Make sure you do the rollercoaster ride called ‘Big Thunder Mountain’. At night it looks tops to be flying around a mountain at fast speeds looking out over Disneyland which is all lit up. A Fast Pass means that you take your ticket up and put it into a machine and it tells you to come back at a certain time to use your fast pass which means, in English, “Jumping the queue”. I used the fast pass for...

Studio Ghibli

by FluffyDice

I had never seen any of the movies made by Studio Ghibli as I don’t watch Manga flicks but my mate suggested it’d be a good thing to check out. The museum is in a place called Mitaka and costs you 1000 yen (about $10 Aus) to get in. Here you will find the history of the studio and it is packed full of info and stuff to see. The ticket looks sweet as (it’s 3 slides of film strip) and you also get to watch 1 of 3 films which has never been aired outside the studio. We watched some film about some sea insects who are in love or they were about to fall in love. The museum takes about an hour or 2 to see, could be done quicker if there wasn’t as many people but the day we went in, it was chock-full. The studio showed historical stuff like how they projected the images, the ways of entertaining audiences before films were around, and all this other neat stuff. Also on show is tons of...

KOBE

by Pixiekatten

January 17th, 1995. More then 6000 people died and whole neighbourhoods was levelled to the ground. But today there's not many, if any, signs of that tragic earthquake.Kobe is one of Japans most vibrant cities and well worth a few days visit. 5 minutes walk from Kobe station you'll find Kobe Harbor Land. A mall with excellent shops but also heaven for the kids. Brightly coloured here's definately a few rides they'll like. Another 5 minutes and you'll reach Meriken Park with Kobe Maritime Museum and just to the east of the park you'll find KOBE EARTHQUAKE MEMORIAL PARK.Nankinmachi (China Town) is a nice place for a walk but cant really compare with Chinatowns in other places. However there is a good atmosphere here and although food is a bit overpriced you still find some yummy treats here. Just be prepared to que up. Then one of the highlights of course is the mountainview of Kobe in the...

A-1 thing to do!

by Mr.Sparkle

In one word, Sakura. In English, cherry blossoms. It is the single most beautiful thing I’ve seen in Japan. They burst onto Japan in the early spring and make their way up the country. From space it must look like popcorn exploding, but I wouldn’t know anything like that. Hope you get to experience them.

Dance, dance, dance

by Mr.Sparkle

If you’re into dancing, or even if you’re not, it neat to see the traditional Japanese dancing. It can go for some quite some time, usually longer than I care for, but it’s good for a half or so. Alcohol usually helps the enjoyment process.

Heian Shrine in Kyoto

by Paul2001

Although it was not quite my favourite monument in Kyoto, the Heian Shrine should be visited for its historical importance. The shrine commemorates the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of Kyoto. It is was built in honour of the 50th emperor of Japan, Emperor Kanmu, who founded the Heian-kyo in 794 A.D. Secondly there are co-honours here for Emperor Komei who ruled from 1831 to 1866. The shrine was built in 1892 and designed to look the administrative buildings of the Heian-kyo period. The buildings were painted in bright shades of orange, green and white. There is also a garden attached to the shrine that is considered to be quite lovely, if you admire Japanese gardens. The Heian Shrine is open daily from 8:30am to 6pm. Admission is free to the grounds but you have to pay Y600 if you want to check out the garden.
