OSAKA: Shi-tennoji and Tennoji-koen

by Pixiekatten

When first arriving to Osaka the city struck me as modern and very busy. The same pulse you find in Tokyo's Shibuya was also beating here. Until I found the quiet and relaxed Shi-tennoji. It was somehow reminding me of Nara. And I spent a fair time walking around here. I sat down near the pond with the turtles, must have been hundreds of them in there, and wrote in my journal. (Admission free)From the temple I walked about 15-20 minutes to Tennoji-koen. A magnificent park and also a zoo and botanical garden. The sun was extremely warm for being early May. This was an excellent day away from the traffic and rushing people in the city centre.

A-BOMB DOME - HIROSHIMA

by Pixiekatten

On August 6th, 1945 disaster stroke Hiroshima. And it stroke hard. 150m southeast of the A-bomb dome the atomic bomb detonated. Time showed 8.15am. Then it stopped. 114 000 people died instantly. But for years to come people would become ill from radiation... thousands and thousands more would die from leukemia. The A-bomb dome used to be the Hiroshima Prefectural Products Exhibition Hall. The building sustained major damage, its interior was completely burned and all 30 persons who were in the building at that time died. In 1967 it was decided that the remains of the building forever would stand as a reminder of what horror an atomic bomb causes.
