Top destination, Kyoto

by gogonicetrip

Kyoto is one of must visit destinations in Japan. For over 1000 years, from 794 to 1868, Kyoto was the imperial capital of Japan. In ancient days, it was also the center of political government. Kyoto's ancient stately festivals were mostly grant costume parades that offer a glimpse of Kyoto from a time when traditional arts, crafts, customs and literature were emerging. To walk Kyoto’s street today is to see and experience to the refined finished product.Kyoto has something for everyone, from ancient Buddhist temples, majestic places, villas, gardens, art, and refined cuisine to discos, teahouse, bar, and burger joints.[Back to Japan]

Suggested itineraries around Tokyo

by gogonicetrip

Foremost among the cultural attractions around Tokyo are Nikko and Kamakura, both of which rate highly among Japan’s must-see.Natural lovers will enjoy the hike in nearby Chichibu-Tama National Park or the Oze region. Those hankering for a view of Mt. Fuji will get an eyeful, providing weather cooperates, in the lovely Fuji Five Lakes rejoin or Hakone area including Ashino-ko Lake.If you would like to take Onsen (Hot Spring), Izu peninsula or Hakone are the best areas.Yokohama, south of Tokyo, is a cosmopolitan port city with a fascinating China town and ebullient nightlife.Narita, a pleasant temple town near the Narita International Airport.[Back to Japan]

Himeji

by saw50st8

A 1/2 day trip to Himeji -- to see the castle. The castle is one of the oldest structures in Japan. You can tour through all the buildings and see both the inside and outside architecture. Its about 1 hour frok Kyoto.

Tip Photo
Mt Fuji and Hakone

by saw50st8

Visit one of the most photographed places in Japan -- Mt Fuji. Make sure to go on a clear day, as the weather can totally block the views of the mountain. [best time to see Mt Fuji is early morning or late evening on a cold day] After seeing Mt Fuji, go to Hakone to see the hot springs, take a cable car ride or a boat ride.

Hiroshima

by saw50st8

Hiroshima (including Miyajima) is an unbelievable experience. The shirne of Miyajima should not be missed (at least in clear weather) and the Peace Museum of Hiroshima is a somber visit that should be included in all the fun. Its important to see the good and bad of whereever you visit.

Kyoto

by saw50st8

A historical place and a must see in Japan. If you do nothing else, come to Kyoto. All the historical temples and shrines are beautiful and there are quite a few side trips that are convenient. Here is also where you can see Geisha in Gion (read Memiors of a Geisha -- its an excellent book!).Spend at least 2 days in Kyoto

Tip Photo
Tokyo

by saw50st8

Tokyo is a city of history, concrete and fun! There is plenty to see and explore here. A definite must on your visit to Japan. One word of caution -- if you are from a city like NY, Tokyo may not be as exciting to you as most. This is what I find when visiting big cities.

Fake Weddings

by pharsadi

That was the first time I saw a wedding ceremony for a show. The ceremony was held in a hotel which had a wedding chapel. The one we went to was at the Hotel Bellclassic Tokyo, in Ikebukuro. The chapel is on the 9th floor. You might be suprised on how beautiful they designed a small chapel on the 9th floor of a hotel. This ceremony is done a couple times a week to show couples who want to get married, but not sure what this ceremony is all about. This is done, as I was told by the 'priest', because the main religion in Japan is Shinto, and they do not have any exposure to western style weddings. Who performs the wedding are the hotel staffs. The ceremony is complete with choir. It's a unique experience for me to watch this kind of ceremony.
