I know most people are weary of karaoke. But most people also love it once they try it. And Japan is the best place to try it. Karaoke boxes are everywhere in Japan. You can get a private room for you and your friends so that you don't have to worry about making a fool of yourself in front of strangers. They have awesome music selections, with plenty in English, and often other Asian languages. You can order food and drinks. Stuck somewhere after train hours? Go find a karaoke box until the trains start running again. Seriously, it is so much fun.

UPDATE: No longer open to the public...C'est Dommage.Noisy, chaotic, messy (wear old shoes) and just fascinating !!! Amazing how the place is in a state of controlled chaos...I loved it. Every kind of creepy crawley from the deep.Get there EARLY.... no fee for this great tourist attraction.

One day visit to Japan's most revered Zen Monastery in Fukui Prefecture. Learn about the Zen monastic life and the monastery's history.I went to Eiheiji Monastery in Fukui in October 2006. From Fukui City, got on a local train, going through rice fields and buckwheet fields. The Monastery is located in the remote area. I was told that over 800,000 people visit this place annually. But, when I got there on Monday morning, the crowds were sparse. The whole area felt like a serious monastic training center rather than a tourist destination. Very spiritual. Very traditional. The admission fee was mere 600Yen or $5.00. The tour of the building is well organized and highly educational. I stopped and read everything that was posted. Young novice monks were working hard. Very good way to spend the day in a country side of Japan. I learned a lot about Zen Buddhism and its history in Japan. The...

I doubt that anyone could list all of the romantic, historic, and atmospheric places to day hike around Kyoto. Many of the atmospheric hills around the city have been preserved from over-development by various temples and shrines. A walkway through a valley made of orange torii gates, a singing blue and white flycatcher singing from a shady perch, a mysterious grotto with burning candles on the altar but no one around except a Jungle Crow...there is some photogenic or mysterious little scene around every corner.
When in Kyoto I told my friends I was heading for Beppu in a few days. They all giggled and adviced me not to go. Said it was more or less only for old japanese Onsen folks... I hesitated. Should I re-arrange my plans..? I didn't in the end. And Im happy I didn't do so. Beppu was one of my trips highlights! It started already at the TIC. Although all tourist information staff in Japan are great this lady was unbelievably friendly and helpful. At one point I thought she was actually going to walk me all the way to my hostel . Also the manager at the Beppu Youth Hostel was amazing! And his wee bar in the back of the place great fun. I was the only one under 45 years and the only westener, but that didn't stop me! I sure learnt how to shoot sake!Beppu IS mainly a spa-resort. There are no less than 3000 thermal springs ("onsen") in Beppu, attracting 12 million (almost exclusively Japanese)...

I went to Japan at the end of April last year and did not think much of cherry blossoms. Of course I heard about the fact that people travel to different areas of Japan to do some blossom viewing but before I went it was not one of my big interests. This did change as soon as we landed...Hanami (cherry blossom viewing) quickly became one of my top things to do in Japan. FACTS. There are a few dozens different kind of cherry trees in Japan. Most only bloom for a couple of days in spring. The Japanese cherry tree dont carry fruit like other cherry trees in the world. The blossoming peak is different depending where in the country you are, from late March (Honshu region) to late May (Hokkaido). On Okinawa they blossom already in January. WHERE TO GO! - Heian Jingu Shrine (Kyoto) - Early April - Admission: Adult 600yen child 300yen- Nara Park (Nara) - Early April - Admission free-...

If there's one experience you should splurge on in Japan- I would stay in a ryokan. We chose one near Mt. Fuji, that allowed us to walk to the hot springs (Fuji Five Lakes). You can experience the hot springs bath, a night of sleeping in a traditional tatami mat-bed, a authentic dinner, and the beauty of Fuji-san.It was a wonderful experience!
