Tokyo

by Maline

The capital of Japan, so much to see in Tokyo, you could spend more than a lifetime exploring it.Tokyo has a population larger than the whole country of Sweden. Roughly the equivalence of the entire population of Sweden travels with the trains and subways here each day. You don't have to spell it out; Tokyo is pretty crowded. As is often the case with larger cities (and here we are talking megacity) there are several downtowns rather than one special. Depending on what you are looking for, you may want to choose different destinations within Tokyo. For a starter I would recommend Shibuya or Shinjuku. These places fulfill the foreigner's Tokyo fantasy of color, people and the likes. If you are a skyscraper junkie Shinjuku is also the place to go.Other places of interest include Ueno (museums and quaint streets, also pachinko heaven), Yoyogi park and the Meiji shrine( the city´s lung and...

Many chinese restaurants and foodstalls are found behind the chinese gates. The Yokohama stadium is nearby. Here you can enjoy a game of baseball. The hometeam is called the Yokohama Baystars. Their colors are blue and yellow. They play in the highest league. If you have time, you can visit Yokohama harbour, or the old foreigeners neighbourhood.Yokohama, a nice daytrip from Tokyo.

Sakura

by tompt

In spring it looks like entire Japan is coloring pink. You will find cherryblossom trees in bloom everywhere. It is a japanese tradition to go and see this beauty, that last so short. They often have a drink or bite to eat under the blossoming trees. The sakura can be seen in different places on different times. Depending on the climate of the part of Japan you are visiting. Just ask in advance if you are in time. The major tourist spots like Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka should be in begin april. But we strongly recommend you visit the small village of Takato in Nagano ken. This village is in the mountains and therefor it is colder and the trees are in bloom later. The peak is around april 20, when 1500 cherryblossom trees are supposed to be in full bloom. It are all trees of the same species, which mean they are in full bloom together coloring Takato completely pink.More on our Takato page, and...

Try the Japanese Rail

by Mytie

If you get a Japanese Rail pass before going to Japan you will be able to tour Japan without paying any extra money. I have used it often and its great to be able to go wherever you want without paying another dime. A good pass usually costs between 350 to 400 dollars. It's worth it though. The best place I have been to is Kyoto. If your interested I have many other tips at my website www.thejte.com

Kotohiro Shrine

by IreneMcKay

The town of Kotohira on Shikoku Island is very pleasant with several restaurants displaying English menus in their windows. We walked to the shrine from the JR Train Station. This walk led us past the old signal tower, which is set in a small, quiet park and along Kotohira's canal. Although it was a warm day, the climb up the shrine was not as hard as I had expected. Several stretches of the climb have a bit of shade and there are places to stop and have a rest on route. Local Japanese take the trip very seriously and almost all of them were equipped with walking sticks. One elderly lady completed the lower part by palanquin and her bearers looked as if they were on the verge of heart failure. Much of the route up the 785 steps of the shrine is lined with picturesque stone lanterns. We were fortunate enough to go during cherry blossom time which added a welcome splash of colour. When you...

Kochi

by IreneMcKay

Kochi is a small town on Shikoku - the smallest of Japan's four islands. The train journey to Kochi from Okayama was spectacular as you travel through a stunning gorge with fantastic scenery. Kochi has a little bridge called Lover's Bridge with a little monument to two ill-fated lovers who died rather than give up their love. It also has a very pretty castle. We arrived at the castle after closing time, but were pleased to find we could still wander around the castle grounds. The grounds were very pleasant with several statues and lots of colourful flowering shrubs. There is a moat around the bottom of the castle. Apparentle Kochi Castle is the only Japanese Castle where you can easily take a picture with the castle and its main gate in the same shot. When you climb up to the castle itself , you'll be rewarded with good views over Kochi. Dusk was falling as we left the grounds and the...

For curious palates, try the local Food

by loneshopper

Japanese (might) have the freshest, healthiest and most delicious food for your curious palates. Be it a simple Onigiri, or a bowl of ramen, or a full course of cold soba and choices of tempura... they are delicious just the same. Japanese are well-known for their passion to details. Presentation is everything! So, as I walked through any big or small street in Japan (or especially in malls or train stations), I could see rows and rows of meticulous presentations of food... any colors, any shapes and any way they are prepared. When you are in Japan, it is the best time to taste the freshness of well-prepared delicacies... even a pack of sushi bought in a shokudo (fast food place) in Okazaki train station is fresher than the sushi in japanese restaurants in my city.
