Tokyo Tower

by huggy93

Not exactly sure of the location of the Tokyo Tower but let's just say that it is one metro stop away from Roppongi (I didn't like Roppongi by night). Well I have been up the Eiffel Tower in Paris and put it this way, the Tokyo Tower is more impressive!! Funnily enough, the Tokyo Tower is taller than the Eiffel Tower!! You can see some amazing views of Tokyo by day and by night, it's all lit up and you can see it from the Roppongi (I don't like Roppongi by night.... have I already said that?) district.

Onsen time!!

by ngcsc

Visit to Japan, if never try the "Onsen", it is like you never been to Japan."Onsen" is the hot spring bath practice by Japanese. There is no Japanese never try "Onsen", it is part of their life, just like no Christian never celebrating Christmas. When visiting Onsen, there are certain rules need to follow:1. Naked, everyone is naked and with a small towel, don't wear your swimsuit, underwear or even shorts... it is impolite, who will wear a shirt when taking a bath2. Keep in mind you have to take a shower before you dip in the common pool. Nobody wanna share you dirty sweat. Clean yourself before with the shampoo provided3. Onsen is a place for Japanese to relax after a day of hardwork. It is strongly suggest that don't make noise in the Onsen. You can chat, but not shouting, joking or running around.

Nikkó

by Maline

Nikko is situated about 120 kilometres north of Tokyo. It is possible to make a day excursion from Toyko and cover the main Nikko sights, but I suggest you start really early in the morning. In Nikko there are several sights to see. First and foremost is the Toshogu shrine, mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieasu, the shogun who started the Tokugawa era. Among other sights you will find the three monkeys here, the ones who "hear no evil, see no evil and speak no evil". Other sights at Nikko include the Rinno-ji temple, the Taiyuin mausoleum of Tokugawa Iemitsu, and the Futarasan shrine (which we didn't sadly have time for).Nikko is one of the places in Japan that have been put on the World Heritage list. The mausoleum and temple area, which is close to the town itself is totally beautiful, set in a forest of high rising cedar trees. When we visited it waas raining, wich was a downer (!) but lent the...

Trip to Nikko

by CEAR

Best highlight of trip was visit to Nikko.....which was a spectacular nest of temples. You can pay a guide to show you around and inform you of the history of the temples. You will see the famous three monkeys who can hear, see or speak no evil, carved into the temples. Try and visit later in the day about 3pm when the bulk of coaches packed with tourists depart! Dont believe guide books which say that Nikko is short walk from station .............good brisk march for about 40 mins uphill!

Sing! ... Japan: Karaoke Heaven

by tigerjapan

Karaoke is a National hobby in Japan. Everyone seems to do it; young or old. That being the case, as a visitor to Japan, so should you.The good thing about karaoke in Japan is that you get your own rooms/booths and so you can sing your little heart out in privacy (great if you're a terrible singer like me!!).Karaoke booths are everywhere and you will have no problem finding one. You'll usually have to decide how long you want to sing for and what sort of plan you want. We always have to extend our time, because we always take an all-you-can-drink plan and get too wasted to stop singing!Do it once... you'll be so glad you did.

Asakusa Samba Festival

by tigerjapan

The Asakusa Samba Carnival is held annually, on a Saturday towards the end of August, in Asakusa, Tokyo (it is actually usually the last Saturday of August). Attracting about 400,000 sightseers the event has a strong international flavor. As a town that grew up around a temple, Asakusa observes many traditional festivals, but the Samba Carnival (which started in 1981) is a new event. It started when the Mayor of Taito City (one of the central 23 cities of Tokyo) invited the winning group from that year's Rio Carnival in Brazil to put on a display. The Major, together with Junzaburo Ban (the actor-comedian) are considered responsible for forming this fantastic international festival. The main attraction of the festival is the samba parade contest. The winning team of the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is invited to perform (along with other samba dance teams) and visitors to the festival can...

Tokyo National Museum

by Paul2001

This was the first actual attraction that I visited when I arrived in Japan. It was a good choice too as the Tokyo National Museum has the largest collection of Japanese art in the world. It is also the oldest and largest museum in Japan. Therefore it is a great place to introduce yourself to Japanese culture. The collections are extensive with exhibits on Japanese ceramics, woodwork, metalwork, scupture and screens (which I love) There are also many displays on the samuri features collections of swords, armour and other weaponry. The museum and its collection are spread out through five buildings, some of which where closed for renovation or had not been opened yet when I visited in 1990. I spent most of my time in the galleries that featured works of Japanese art in the Honkan building. I also visited the Gallery of Eastern Antiquities (Toyokan) which is the home of works dedicated to...

Mt. Fuji

by Elmsaafir

Unfortunately, for something so big, Mt. Fuji is rather elusive...We live within sight of it, but I only saw it one time during my last visit. We did see a documentary though about a bunch of 5 year olds that climbed it...it was so sad, it was funny. They were all crying, and those mean old adults were forcing them march on up the side of the mountain...bizzare. In the states, that would be considered child abuse, and all the adults would be thrown in prison!

Enoshima Island 1

by Elmsaafir

Just down the coast from where we live in Kamakura is Enoshima Island. It's about .4 km square, so it's pretty small. Connected to the mainland by a 600 m causeway (pedestrian and vehicle), it's an easy walk from the Enoshima station (ENODEN line). It's got several shrines, and will give you a good workout if you walk to all of them (lots of steps).
