The Basic Pavilion- Konponchu do

by PolishChick

Yamadera is both one of the greatest religious and historic treasures of the Yamagata Perfecture. It was built in the year 860. It is said that Ennin, the monk who started the construction, crashed the rocks and built the Basic Pavilion by himself.

Yamadera- a pearl of the north...

by PolishChick

The Yamadera temple is a truly magical destination. It`s location in northern Honsiu makes it not be one of the top most visited places, but I believe thanks to that it has stayed so quiet, wonderful and truly amazing. The town of Yamadera is probably one of the most beautiful little towns I`ve ever been to. It`s one of those tiny little places that live from tourism and have more shops and vending maschines than citizens....it was so quiet and pretty thugh!!! The train station was the tiniest I`ve ever seen in Japan and I remember I was the only person waiting for the train there. I could watch Yamadera up there on the slope of the hill and hear the cicadas....One of the greatest moments!!!

1100 steps up and you`re there...

by PolishChick

Yamadera is about 45 minutes away by train from Sendai and 15 minutes away from the capital of the Yamagata perfecture- Yamagata. I wouldn`t have probably visited it if my friend hadn`t had to go to work. But because she did, I decided to take a one-day trip somewhere not too far away from Sendai. Yamagata was fairly close and I`m glad I decided on it. It was one of my Japan`s favourites!!!Yamadera consists of 40 buildings placed on tops and slopes of picturesque hills. Visiting it is a thing for the tough- to get to the Inside Sanstuarium (Oku no in) you have to go up 1100 stone steps. Gambatte (good luck) !!! :)

A boat ride in Matsushima bay....2

by PolishChick

I would really suggest you go on one of the boat rides. At first I was like "what for?" because the view from the coast was amazing, but believe me, the view from the boat will be even more amazing!!! The boat ride we took was a typical tourist boat ride. It was over Y1000, lasted about half an hour and went around the whole bay, so we could take a look at the islands and take pictures. It was truly wonderful- they gave the kids bread to feed the seals, had information about Matsushima for the adults (in Japanese, so don`t ask me what it was lol) and stopped at the best viewing spots so everyone could take pictures. I would higly recommend the boat ride, you will love it!

CLIMBING Mt. Fuji....2

by PolishChick

In order to enjoy a safe hike to the summit of Mount Fuji, it is crucial to bring the proper equipment. Some of the most important things to bring are proper shoes, proper clothes protecting you against rain and cold (it can get below 0 at the summit and the wather is very moody and unstable), a flashlight or a headlight if you are gonna climb at night and food and drinks. Although mountain huts offer a variety of those, the prices rise with the altitude. I would also advise you take an oxygen bottle with you, as going up you can feel the air getting thiner and thiner. I had a couple of waves of headaches and it really helped me out. What else can I say.....It was cold, hard, really exhausting, so tireing I can`t even start describing it. But it was great, awesome and really rewarding as well! The best thing was the atmosphere on the trail- people saying "gambatte" (try hard, good luck)...

LOOKING at Mt. Fuji...

by PolishChick

Every nation has that one beloved thing which it cherishes above everything else. But no other nation cherishes it as much as the Japanese cherish Mt. Fuji!!!Mt. Fuji is Japan`s most recognizable symbol and one of it`s most beautiful sights. Fujisan is with 3776 meters Japan's highest mountain. It is nearly perfectly shaped and has been worshipped as a sacred mountain for centuries. It`s a dormant volcano, which most recently erupted in 1708. It stands on the border between Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefectures and can be seen from Tokyo and Yokohama on clear days. The Japanese totally love it. They love to watch it and even have special observation places where they go JUST to watch it. I swear- when we were close to Nagano, our Japanese friend took us up a mountain JUST because there was a pretty view of Fujisan there!!! Her mom couldn`t come with because of a broken leg, so my friend...

The bridges in the bay

by PolishChick

Two of the biggest islands and Godaido are connected with the coast by wonderful, red bridges. I strongly recommend you take a walk on at least one of them and check out one of the islands!!! My friend and I went to see Godaido and then went on the bridge to the Fuukura-jima island (whatever that means... ;). It was truly wonderful. Not only the walk on the bridge was really cool (a really romantic place!!!) but the island was great as well. There was a tiny temple there, a resting area with benches and a lot of great viewing places of the bay. I really loved it there!

Godaido Temple in Matsushima

by PolishChick

On a tiny island connected with the coast by 2 short bridges there is a little Godaido temple. This very orginal in its shape temple was built in IX century. It is opened only 3 times a century, so good luck fitting it in your sheduele!!! ;) However, you can still see the beautiful outside with very orginal Chinese zodiac sculptures. The bridges leading to the temple are very fun too- there are built so you can see the water deep underneath your feet- a bit freaky and watch your step! Surrouned by pine trees Godaido looks really great on the water and is one of Matsushimas must-sees.

HAKONE - ALL IN JAPANESE-STYLE

by I-Believe-I-Can-Fly

We stayed in a small Japanese-style hotel with a Japanese-style room, complete with a paper sliding door. There were no beds in the room, instead there were futons on the tatami mat floor. The hotel provided yukata (a casual cotton kimono) and slippers in each room and we were expected to wear them during our dinner. Our guide instructed us on the proper manner to wear these robes. Fold the right side to cover the body, then fold the left side over the top of the right side. Never do the reverse version as it is preparing for the dead person. Then tie the obi around the waist. Once it have tied the bow, slide the obi around so the ribbon is behind.

MT. FUJI - BEST IN WINTER

by I-Believe-I-Can-Fly

At the height of 3,776m, FUJI-SAN is Japan's highest mountain. Mt. Fuji is a notoriously reclusive mountain, often hidden by cloud. So the best time to reach the top is at dawn - because early morning is the time the mountain is least likely to be shrouded in cloud. The view are usually best in winter and early spring when a snow cap adds to the spectacle.
