The Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima
The Peace Memorial Museum is probably one of the most important museums in Japan. I highly recommend a visit both for the excellence of it exhibits and for its content. The museum is dedicated to the events surrounding the fateful day of August 6, 1945 when the American armed forces dropped the A-bomb on this city which had a population of 350,000 at the time. The bomb instantly killed more that 85,000 people while another 60,000 would later die from the after effects to the bomb. The museum is divided into two buildings. The East building tells the story of Hiroshima before the bomb was dropped and discusses why the Americans chose this city as the sight of the first nuclear bombing. As you walk through this museum you can consider if the bombing was justified or not. The West building holds many excellent displays on how the bombing effected the local civilian population.
