The Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima

by Paul2001

The Peace Memorial Museum is probably one of the most important museums in Japan. I highly recommend a visit both for the excellence of it exhibits and for its content. The museum is dedicated to the events surrounding the fateful day of August 6, 1945 when the American armed forces dropped the A-bomb on this city which had a population of 350,000 at the time. The bomb instantly killed more that 85,000 people while another 60,000 would later die from the after effects to the bomb. The museum is divided into two buildings. The East building tells the story of Hiroshima before the bomb was dropped and discusses why the Americans chose this city as the sight of the first nuclear bombing. As you walk through this museum you can consider if the bombing was justified or not. The West building holds many excellent displays on how the bombing effected the local civilian population. There are...

A visist to....."hell"

by His_Beloved

If you have the chance to visit Beppu City in Oita Prefecture (well know for its hotsprings), make sure you visit the various "hell" ponds in the city. There are 8 hell ponds, including Ocean Hell, Blood Pond Hell, Mountain Hell, and Monk Hell, which where created over 1100 years ago when Mt Tsurumi exploded and left behind several boiling ponds. Ocean Hell is so named because of the natural cobalt blue color of the pond (which boils at 98 degrees F).The full tour costs about 2000 yen or about 400 yen for a single entrance. Go for the single entrance for Ocean Hell, paying the full amount is just a typical tourist rip-off.

Ninjo Castle, Kyoto, Japan

by misodiva

This was an imperial castle when the capital was Kyoto before Tokyo. Since you cannot go into the current imperial residence in Tokyo, it was great to see this one. We went with the sunrise tour group with an english speaking guide and really got a lot out of it. The castle has beautiful gold leaf panels with paintings. You can walk around in the castle and view the rooms and then see the beautiful gardens.

Fujikyu Highland

by sjvessey

If amusement parks are your thing, you could do worse than spend the day at Fujikyu Highland, especially if the day is a hot, sunny one. It's not a theme park as such, because there is no theme, and anyone used to American-style parks may find Fujikyu a little bare-boned and compact. There's no effort spent on cutesy animal characters here, just a high density of various rides. The main attraction is the Fujiyama rollercoaster, once the tallest in the world (and for all I know, it may still be), as attested by the certificate from the Guinness Book of Records dated 1997 which hangs from the wall by the entrance. At 79 metres high, with an initial frop of 71 metres, and a top speed of 130 kmh, Fujiyama is frightening...!!Other rides include a water chute which leaves you absolutely drenched unless you take the easy way out and cover yourself from head to toe in one of the disposable white...

Sumo

by sjvessey

There are only six sumo tournaments a year, each lasting around 15 days, and they're held in different cities. If you're lucky enough to be around in the right place at the right time, you should definitely check it out. Try to watch some on TV beforehand and you'll get a lot more out of the live experience, especially if you speak English and have access to the English voice-over that comes with one of the channels that broadcasts sumo in the evenings.Sumo comes to Tokyo three times out of the six, and unless you go on the last weekend, you should have no problems just turning up on the door and getting a ticket, although you might find that the best A seats (the ground floor) have gone. Unless you are used to sitting cross-legged on a small cushion, however, this could be a blessing in disguise. B seats (on the first floor) still give a good view. It's quite expensive, but then again,...

The Shin-kyo bridge in Nikko

by Paul2001

The Shin-kyo bridge is one of the great images of Nikko and Japan itself. The bridge was built in 1630. Legend has it that this was the spot where a Buddhist priest was assisted in crossing the ragging river below by two snakes which had attached themselves, forming a bridge across the width of the river. The bridge is quite eyecatching with its redish orange colour. Unfortunately as of this writing the bridge is being rebuilt and you can not see it.

Visit the Imperial Palace, Tokyo.

by worldkiwi

On a Sunday afternoon, we zapped up to Tokyo from Yokohama, where we were staying to just have some quick sightseeing. We chose to go to the Imperial Gardens. Entrance is free through the Ote-mon gate, a short walk north west of Tokyo Central Railway Station. The park closes at 1700.The eastern garden (which is at the northern end stangely enough), is the main attraction, with a large pond. You can walk around to view the famous Niju-bashi bridge and that equally well known glimpse of the palace proper in the background. We were there in the evening and the sun was in the wrong place, so go in the morning to get good photos. At about 1700, the best vantage point for the bridge is closed off and you will be shooed away by guards.

The 'White Egret" of Himeji.

by worldkiwi

Himeji is a city west of Osaka and easily reached from there on the express trains from Osaka station (return fare JPY2900). The city is well known for its authentic castle which, according to the guide brochure , in its current form, dates back to 1609, although there has been a fort there since 1333. The castle's main keep is an impressive sight as one walks up Otemai-dori from the train station (only a 15 minute walk). It is known as the 'white egret' and even on a grey, drizzly day I could see why.Entrance is JPY600. The day we went, it was a Sunday and the place was packed out with thousands of Japanese visitors. We started by walking through the Hyakken-rouka in the Nishinomaru Bailey. This long timbered corridor has many small rooms off it, which give good views over the cherry trees to the donjon (central keep). At the end of the corridor is a tatami matted room, which was...

Yokohama - a harbour city with character.

by worldkiwi

Yokohama was a big surprise. I was only there for three days, but of all the Japanese cities I visited, it was my favourite. The Minato Mirai 21 waterfront area is an absolute picture of urban design done right - especially at night. The city itself is characterised by gently rolling hills and lots of single dwelling houses and far less concrete multi-storey walling in of streets. Chinatown is an interesting spot to amble and Yamashita Park provides a nice place to watch the activity in the bay.
