Cherry Blossoms

by Lunalani

In the beginning of April, you can see the beautiful pink cherry blossoms all over the country. In Japan, there is a special activity called the HANAMI. Basically, we sit under the cherry blossom tree, drink, appreciate the flower, drink, and drink. LOL The bad thing is that you can only see the Cherry Blossoms for about a week to ten days since they fall. So travelling in April is a good time. Summers can get really hot (Rains in June) and the winters are cold. Spring and Autumn would be the best season to travel.

Hiroshima Peace Park

by misodiva

I had thought about skipping this as I had seen pictures and knew what happened. But the peace museum was very informative about why the A bomb was dropped in Hiroshima and its place in history. It was so moving and horrific that I felt nauseous, but I am so glad that I went. Really makes you take time to contemplate war, and I am very glad I went.

The new faces of Japan

by manuelEB

Ineluctably Japan heads toward diversity. Good for them. Good for the rest of the World.Every year more a more foreign kids join the great and happy mass of Japanese kids in public schools. In four years span, the two boys ( easy to identify in the middle of picture) will be the stars of the ceremony they were witnessing. Their time to say in front of everybody their dreams... Ah! so diverse things were said that morning: baseball players, soccer players, veterinary doctors, model, artist, painters, scientist, public servents... Public servents!!!!!!! (-;

TOKYO

by kiwigal_1

This is Japan's capital and largest city. I haven't spent a lot of time here during my three years in Japan but I did have the opportunity to visit a few times. There is a lot to see and do here but not everything need cost you a lot of money. Take a look at my Tokyo page for more ideas on what to see and do around Tokyo - on a budget!! %

KOCHI

by kiwigal_1

Kochi is the biggest city on the southern end of Shikoku Island. It is also a castle town with an interesting history. I enjoyed being in this town and although it looks much the same as other Japanese towns I thought the atmosphere here was rather special. Take a look at my Kochi page for more information!

NIIGATA

by kiwigal_1

Niigata is a city located in northern Japan. It is very cold in winter and has some of the heaviest snowfalls in Japan. I went there in summer to see a friend.Bandai Bridge, Shinano River (the longest river in Japan), Hakusan Park and Shrine, World Cup 2002 Soccer games were played in Niigata. Take a look at my Niigata page for more information!

KUMAMOTO

by kiwigal_1

Kumamoto is a castle city in Southern Kyushu. I recommend having a stopover in Kumamoto when travelling between Fukuoka and Kagoshima and seeing the castle and Suizenji Gardens. See my Kumamoto page for more information!

KITAKYUSHU

by kiwigal_1

Kitakyushu is an industrial city known mainly for steel production. It was also my home for two years. It is a large sprawling city made up of the five former cities of Moji, Kokura, Yahata, Wakamatsu and Tobata. The Lonely Planet Japan guide says that you should give Kitakyushu a miss. I agree in some respects as it hasn't got the beautiful temples of Kyoto or the large shopping opportunities offered by Tokyo, Osaka or even nearby Fukuoka . Nevertheless, this city still has a lot to see and do here and the beaches were better than many others I have seen in Japan. This picture was taken at Iwaya Beach in Kitakyushu. The sunsets in Japan can be spectacular and I was very lucky to have my camera with me when I got this one! There are ferry connections between Kitakyushu (at Shin-Moji Port) and Osaka and Kobe. Take a look at my Kitakyushu page for more information!

MATSUMOTO

by kiwigal_1

Matsumoto is the second largest city in Nagano Prefecture. The main attraction in the city is Matsumoto Castle. It is a reconstructed castle but has beautiful surroundings all year round. There are also many good onsen in the towns near Matsumoto. Matsumoto airport services the prefecture. Matsumoto Castle is very pretty in winter (see pic) with the snow all around. It is also a nice castle to view in spring with Cherry Blossoms. Take a look at my Matsumoto page for more information!

NAGASAKI

by kiwigal_1

I haven't built a separate page on Nagasaki yet but like Hiroshima I felt the same sense of shock and incredulity when I visited this city. It is a really beautiful city and the people are so warm and friendly. It is hard to believe that many of them must have known someone who was affected by the A-Bomb back on August 9th, 1945.Nagasaki's A Bomb Museum is a must see for anyone travelling to this city. I also highly recommend the Peace Park nearby.Photograph courtesy of Yosuke Yamahata
