HIROSHIMA

by kiwigal_1

Hiroshima should be on everyone's list of places to go in Japan. It is a haunting place to be and can evoke some very strong emotions in you just being there. When the Atomic Bomb hit the city of Hiroshima in August 6th 1945 thousands of people died and almost the entire city structures where wiped out. There are a few buildings such as the Prefectural Office building pictured that still stand as reminders of that terrible day. The museum and park in Hiroshima are also tributes to the people who perished. Please see my Hiroshima page for more details on this historically important city!

NARA

by kiwigal_1

Nara is a very beautiful, traditional town and apart from Kyoto is the center of Buddhist Japan. Many Japanese schoolkids have excursions to the temples here in their 3rd year of Junior High School. Some of my friends were lucky enough to accompany them on their trip! The main temple in Nara is Todaiji which houses the biggest bronze Buddah in Japan. There are peaceful trails in the forests behind the main temples which lead to more remote temples. Nara is also home to many deer that roam all over the city. Beware, they eat anything!!Nara is located in the Kansai Region in Nara Prefecture. It is close to Osaka, Kyoto, Kobe and Himeji. The Shinkansen doesn't run directly to Nara so it is necessary to change to a Limited Express train from these cities. Please see my Nara page for more details on this historical city!

HIMEJI

by kiwigal_1

Himeji is a city located in the Kansai area of Japan not far from Osaka. It's claim to fame is this beautiful castle. The castle is a national treasure and one of the best castles you could possibly see in Japan. This picture is one of my personal favourites. Don't forget to look at my Himeji page for information!

OSAKA

by kiwigal_1

Osaka is the second largest city in Japan. It is an awesome city to visit and there is a lot to keep one occupied. The Umeda Sky Building pictured is one of the coolest buildings I have seen in Japan. Osaka Castle and many temples are interesting sites to visit. Osaka is also a great place to shop! Find electronics in Den Den Town .When I visited Osaka I actually stayed in nearby Kobe. It was very easy to commute between the interesting cities in Kansai as the train system in Japan is so good. Please see my Osaka page for more information!

FUKUOKA

by kiwigal_1

Fukuoka is the biggest city on Kyushu. It is a cosmopolitan city with lots of interesting things to see and do. It was rated one of the best cities worldwide to live in (source unknown)Fukuoka is home to the Daiei Hawks, one of Japan's champion baseball teams. The large dome and the Fukuoka Tower next to it are major tourist attractions. There are many great shops and restaurants in Fukuoka. The harbour is dotted with beautiful islands, great for day trips. Fukuoka is a great place to live in and worth a stopover on any trip around Kyushu. Please see my Fukuoka page for more details on this lovely city!

NAGANO

by kiwigal_1

Nagano is a one of the largest Prefectures in Japan. It is located to the east of Tokyo and is connected by Shinkansen. The two major cities in Nagano are Nagano City and Matsumoto City. Zenkoji Temple is in Nagano City. Zenkoji Temple is a place for prayer, light and enlightenment . Many pilgrims make there way to Zenkoji to be blessed and the city is constantly dotted with tour buses. Nagano is also the center of the Japanese Alps. The opportunities for skiing and snowboarding here are great. In the summer the mountains are excellent for hiking. Cross country skiing is also enjoyed here. Please see my Nagano page for many more tips on what to see and do in Nagano!

OKINAWA

by kiwigal_1

Okinawa is a group of islands south of Kyushu quite near Taiwan. It is the only place in Japan with a sub-tropical climate. At the time of writing there wasn't a separate place on VT for my Okinawa pics so here is one of me on Eef Beach on Kumejima . This is one of the smaller islands in the Okinawa area. It can be reached either by ferry or small plane from Naha. It was a much more beautiful and relaxing place to be than the main island (Naha), I thought. Okinawa is a great place to unwind. The shopping is good there because of the heavy American influence. The beaches are fantastic. There are great opportunities for snorkelling and diving in Okinawa although courses for certification may be more expensive than other parts of the world. Night view of Mountain Hakodate, Hokkaido

by evonne

The night view is amazing! Formed by a myriad twinkling lights and the harbor of Hakodate, It is a view which I could hardly imagine. Although the mountain top was crowded of people, I try my best to find a space to take pictures and appreciate the view. And of course there are souvenir shops for shopping and sending postcard. I even called back home to tell my mother what I had seen!

Tip Photo
Asakusa Temple, Tokyo City

by evonne

The temple and the area around it is bustling and crowded. various venders and shops and people dressed in traditional Japanese costume with delighted faces build the view. Tourists can browse the street and visit the temple at the end of the street. After visiting, there are even amulets sold. There is also a tourist office at Asakusa. Visitors can gather all kinds of travel information about Tokyo here.

Tip Photo
Showa Shinzan, Hokkaido

by evonne

A series of violent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions from 1943~1944 finally created the mountain. The mountain is 407 meters in height, with a pyramid shape. Tourists can still see it spouting out smokes today.
