Tazawako, AKITA

by Sharrie

The lakes of Japan. Well, most people don't go to Japan to see lakes but more to experience its culture. Japan is not well known for nature trip. However, I have always been enchanted by this small but amazingly interesting & in its own way, an exotic country. Hence, I found many parts of Japan & its 4 seasons to be very "naturalistic" (is there such a word? ;-)) Japan is best seen if one sees through the eyes of a poet. It's poetic... Venturing into the interior of Japan. I have done that many times. More times than many Japanese. This is partly thanks to the discounts that foreign travelers enjoy as a tourist on its JR (Japan Rail) system as well as for my own unexplained fascination with this country. May be I was a Japanese in my past lives ;-)2 of the most enchanting lakes have to be TAZAWAKO & OKAMA. TAZAWAKO is at the northern end of the Honshu island, between the city of Morioka...

Nara's Horyu-ji Temple

by Paul2001

Horyu-ji Temple, near Nara, is in terms of architectual history, one of the most important Buddhist temples in all of Japan or even Asia for that matter. The temple dates from the early 7th century, just fifty years after Buddhism was introduced to Japan. The temple grounds consist of one large compound that surrounds a smaller but important second enclosure. It is here where most of the important buildings of the temple complex are located. As with most Japanese Buddhist temples the most eyedrawing object is the pagoda. The five story pagoda here is the oldest in Japan. Unlike most Japanese pagodas, you can enter this one and scan over the statues inside. However as interesting as this might be the reason you and the masses of tourist have come to Horyu-ji is for the Kon-do or Great Hall. This the oldest wooden building in the world and dates from the late 7th century. It actually...

Kamakura's Engaku-ji Temple

by Paul2001

The first of the great Zen temples that you come to when walking from Kamakura train station is the 13th century Engaku-ji Temple. The temple consists of a magnificent main gate which actually dates from 1783. As you walk through it you approach the Buddha Hall( or Butsuden), which is actually a modern recreation of an earlier building. There are several other buildings scattered around the temple compound worth a look. Among them is Butsanchi-an where Hojo Tokimune, a 13th century regent is enshrined. With its setting against a hill, the lovely high pinetrees and pretty ponds all marvelously maintained I found that Engaku-ji temple was a great introduction to Zen temple architecture. The temple is open daily from 8am to 5pm and costs 200 yen to enter.

another MIHO Museum view

by kenHuocj

......" It is difficult not to be dazzled by the Miho Museum. Part of its charm is its remoteness. You do not expect to find something like this in the middle of nowhere. "..... ....... " The only way to the Miho Museum is through a 500 metre long tunnel and then over a bridge. Japan's newest museum is nestled in the hills outside Kyoto. Designed by the architect I M Pei, most of the building is underground. The mountain had to be replaced on top. There is no feeling of being underground inside. The glass roof lets in plenty of light and lets the wind whistle through its eaves. ",,,,,,, ,,,,,,,,I M Pei also designed the Glass pyramid of the Louvre

Some general stuff - see travelogues for more

by Rikusan

You must goto Hiroshima. I took a bullet train from Osaka and it is really quick and easy. Buy a Japan Rail pass before going to Japan as otherwise its very expensive. If you visit Kyoto hire a bike. There is so many sites to see but life is so much easier with a push bike. Goto the tourest infomation under the tower opposite Kyoto station. They will direct you. Its about 2 minutes from the station and costs a few Euros. Also for something different. I got tired of doing fours days solo site seeing so I went on a walking tour. Its run by a Japanese gentleman called Jonnine Walker! Meet at Kyoto station. With your back to the station there is a bus ticket place to your right which is sort of recessed in the ground. They meet down there at 10am. Its a four hour tour of places you would not otherwise know about. Very Very interesting.Hejime Castle, see photo. a Short train west of Osaka. This...

Japanese Garden

by lisalu524

Kenrokuen Gardens are amazing. We only had a couple of hours to spend there, but more would have been better, even if to just sit and soak in the beauty. Lush green gardens accented with abundant ponds, waterways, fish, and stone bridges and lanterns. Fantastic.

Japanese History

by lisalu524

Hida no Sato was a pleasant surprise, and is not to be breezed through in an hour. That's what we had expected, and we spent the whole day! Besides being beautiful and peaceful, it is full of information about historical Japan. Some of the houses there (or houses like them) were used for silk-making. Literature provides information about the use of fire in the houses. People on site work on traditional embroidered handicrafts.

Inari

by nepalgoods

In Inari is a famous Shinto shrine. For good luck people use to offer bright red gates to the temple and the local god. The richer the people are the bigger the gate is. In the forest nearby there are kilometres of red gates.

The old city of Nara with its forests, temples and nice people impressed me very much. Not far from the city center is the temple district, where you can find almost wild deer to wander around. This animals are holy in Nara.
