Japanese Dolls

Origami

by Sharrie

Try your hand at ORIGAMI: The art of folding paper into beautiful & useful shapes; most renowed of which is the SENBAZURU (a thousand cranes). Folding things is a common practice in the Japanese daily life, from the use of kimono, furoshiki (wrapping cloths), sleeping mat, gift wrapping, etc... They have evolved into a formal etiquette! It's very common to find Origami under the school curriculum as the Japanese believe that paper play would develop logical thinking, creativity, imagination & manual dexterity in children. The vesatility of this creative art also means that two artists may follow the same steps for making a mask but the end results may be different due to the artists' differing emotions, personalities & knowledge. Amazing, isn't it?

Shopping!

by Sharrie

Go to the departmental stores (another term for the mall) & there are many of them, each offering different items of the same range of products. You're guaranteed a very good time even if you just window-shop; the biggest is a 13-storey building called Seibu in Ikebukuro in Tokyo! Alternatively go to Shinjuku or Roppongi for the trendy. Check out what's the latest craze in Japan!

The Ohara Musuem of Art in Kurashiki

by Paul2001

The Ohara Museum of Art is the first private art museum to be opened in Japan. The collection was begun by local business tycoon Ohara Magosaburo back in 1930 with the assistance of an artist friend of his, Kojima Torajiro who collected important works of art from Europe for Ohara. Kojima was an astute collector because the collection on display is rather strong. Artists like Gauguin, Monet, and Matisse are all represented. This gallery is exceptionally crowded and I suggest that you visit early in the day. The website below is in Japanese only, so good luck in checking it out.

by Paul2001

The A-Bomb Dome marks the spot over which the first atomic bomb was detonated over Hiroshima by the Americans on August 9, 1945. The initial explosion immediately killed about 90,000 people. An estimated 90,000 others died from their injuries and diseases relating the explosion years afterward.

The Ginkaku-ji Temple (Silver Pavilion) of Kyoto

by Paul2001

The Ginkaku-ji Temple is a 16th century temple in the Northeastern section of central Kyoto. The temple has burnt on several occasions and litlle remains of the original temple which used to be covered with silver leaf. The grounds of the temple have wonderful gardens and sculpted white sand. The temple marks the beginning of Kyoto's Philosopher's Path through the eastern reaches of Kyoto. This path is extremely pretty, passing through many well maintained gardens and ancient temples.

by misakitaguchi

During spring season, you can enjoy cherry blossoms viewing. We Japanese likes to see them with sake and karaoke.Cherry blossoms is "sakura" in Japanese.Sakura bloom are 3/20 to 4/20 I think, it depends on place. I think day time sakura and night time sakura is so different. Which prefer? Just check out your self! It is really beautiful.

Kyoto

by kwaichang

This ancient capitol city is a must see. FDR prohibited bombing the city because he thought it too beautiful and precious. It is. Go to the Golden Pavillion, the Ninja Palace and wander to enjoy the flavor of Japan before it becomes too "Tokyoized". Oh and take a bus trip down to Nara and see The Great Buddha housed in the largest wooden structure in the world. It will humble you.

The CAnal City if Fukuoka

by yen_2

Canal City is one of the most recent developments in Fukuoka -- it is based on an American shopping mall and while limited due to tight land restrictions it has a large array of shops, cinemas, restaurants, and things outlandish. Next to it is the Hyatt Hotel which has a great selection of restaurants including my personal favorite, Gobi Q, a Mongolian BBQ that fries up some great food. You could pick a different selection of meats, vegetables and sauces and go there day after day, and still taste something new. Cost is about 1200 yen for a weekday lunch.

Tip Photo
Akita

by yen_2

AKITA, It is a prefecture (Americans: think "State") in the north of Japan's main island. It's a part of Japan outside of the main urban commerce and tourism loop. Accordingly, it is a place with much natural beauty and old Japanese culture.
