Mount Fuji

by Gili_S

There is no real visit to Japan without at list going to see this mount Fuji. The highest and most famous mountain in Japan. It is not far from Tokyo and worth a visit if you have the time. By no means, do not go only to see it but plan to stay around the mountain regions for couple of days and enjoy the nature around it as well as amazing sunrise over the mountain.

Osaka

by Gili_S

Osaka is another of the biggest cities and business centers in Japan. I must admit that I visited Osaka because our direct flight from Finland landed here ;-) But Osaka is very nice city with lots of interesting things to see and do as well it is very close to Kyoto and good gateway to whom even want to explore Kyoto.

Visit Kyoto

by Gili_S

Kyoto is the old capital on Japan and to me was the most interesting place to visit and experience culture and tradition. It is easy to get to Kyoto by train from Osaka or Tokyo and reserver the minimum of 2-3 days to explore this beautiful city.

Thank you very much for your quick answers, dider06 and SfumatoPants.Your answers are helpful.I have got other information from my friend in Japan.-The Kabuki-za theater is very popular in March and April becasue of its farewell performance before its rebuilding.-tokyokabukiguide.com has the tickets for the tourists and gives highlights before the show begins. Todai Ji (Nara, Kansai area)

by tigerjapan

Todaiji is one of Nara's most famous temples. It houses a large statue of the sitting Buddha. Inside the main structure is the Daibutsu (large Buddha) and various other historical and religious artifacts. A popular thing with the kids is a large pillar with a hole at the bottom. Kids (and some very small adults) crawl through the space, which represents the Buddha's nostril. Making it through will give you good health! Please see my Nara page for more details

Kasuga Taisha (Nara, Kansai Area)

by tigerjapan

You could spend quite a while just wandering around Kasuga Shrine. It is the area where most of the deer are in and around.Kasuga Shrine is classified as one of Japan's top 3 shrines. It is a must-see activity for anyone in the Kansai area.Surrounded by the 'Kasuga Taisha Shrine Jin'en Park', it is a relaxing place to visit for anyone. The plants and trees in the park appear in Japan's oldest poetry anthology called "Man'yoshu".Near the north enterance to the shrine is the Homotsu-den (Treasure Hall). It contains equipment used in no, gagaku and bugaku performances, as well as Shinto ceremonial costumes etc. Please refer to my Nara pages for more detailed information.

Hire a volunteer guide

by albaaust

We used a volunteer guide in Kanazawa a few years ago and he was fine. He was a retired doctor. We travelled by bus and a taxi (which we paid for). He was very knowledgeable and for a change it was nice to speak to a local Japanese about his city (town) rather than just doing it ourselves which we did everywhere else. We had taken plenty of packets of Tim Tams and coffee(the Japanese love them) as small gifts so we gave that to him as well. No money was exchanged.

Onsen (Japanese hotsprings)

by VagabondChimp

Take in a nice soak at a local hotspring/spa. There are hundreds around Japan. Soaking is usually segregated- males on one side, females on another. Most are developed and cost a fee to use. Some forbid tattoos. Look for a sign resembling steaming water to note onsens.

Ofuro

by theworldnomad

An Ofuro is a public bath house. As I was told, long time (and in some cases now too) houses in Japan didn't have a bathroom so to get clean they would use the public baths called Ofuro.Ofuros are now all over Japan, in Major cities as Tokyo or Osaka as well as in most little towns. Some of them Open 24 hours, so you are abble to sleep in the Ofuro (a relaxation room is provided with chairs, TV, Air-con, etc). Some of them are small but other have up to 10 or more pools to deep in and most of them have a wet sauna and a dry sauna.I personally go one time a month just to soak in. Normally in small towns the cost is 5 dollars average but in the city goes up to 12 or 20, That includes sometimes an overnight stay beating the price of Hotels. Many Salaryman in Japan stay in Ofuros overnight when they miss their last train.
