Nagasaki is an attractively situated port city on the island of Kyushu and the capital of Nagasaki Prefecture. Kyoto (京都, Kyōto?) (IPA /kʲoːto / listen (help·info) is a city in the central part of the island of Honshū, Japan. It has a population close to 1.5 million. Formerly the imperial capital of Japan, it is now the capital of Kyoto Prefecture, as well as a major part of the Osaka-Kobe-Kyoto metropolitan areaKyoto was Japan's capital and the emperor's residence from 794 until 1868. It is now the country's seventh largest city with a population of 1.4 million people and a modern face. Over the centuries, Kyoto was destroyed by many wars and fires, but due to its historic value, the city was dropped from the list of target cities for the atomic bomb and spared from air raids during World War II. Countless temples, shrines and other historically priceless structures survive in the city today.
Hiroshima is located about 230 miles west of Kyoto on the Seto Inland Sea side. Hiroshima-city is the capital of Hiroshima prefecture and is known as the first city attacked by an atomic bomb on August 6, 1945. Miyajima Island in the Seto Inland Sea is one of Japan's most scenic sights and attracts many visitors throughout the year.
Daishoin Temple is the burial site of half of the Mori daimyo (feudal lords), who governed from Hagi during the Edo Period (1603-1868), and who were alternately buried at either Daishoin or Tokoji Temple. Hundreds of donated stone lanterns surround the graves. Apart from the burial site, the temple grounds, including the small garden behind the main building, make a slightly neglected and pleasantly rustic impression.
Beppu is one of Japan's most famous hot spring resorts, producing more hot spring water than any other resort in the country. Beppu offers an unmatched range of baths to be enjoyed, including ordinary hot water baths, mud baths, sand baths and steam baths. In addition, the Hells of Beppu are several spectacular hot springs for viewing rather than bathing.
I just got back from my 3rd trip to Japan, and visited many areas around these 2 cities where I kept my hotels--Tokyo and Kyoto! For Tokyo, I would recommend a day-trip to Nikko. Start out early! Nikko is kind of like your mountainous resort towns like we have in Canada--Banff, Jasper etc. Lots of scenery, a monkey here and there, and a lovely waterfall at the end! You will take probably 2 trains to get there (they run once an hour from Utsunomiya), and then a bus takes you to the scenic spots. 2 in particular you should keep in mind: Kegon-no Taki Waterfall, and the Tokugawa shrine area. The bus cost is pricey--about 1,100JPY (about $10 US) one-way to get from the train station to the top of the mountain where the waterfall (and monkeys!) await. In winter, the hot spring experience will be all the more memorable. Also, if you go to Sapporo in Hokkaido, you can catch the Sapporo Ice Festival, which is well-known in Asia. If you enjoy skiing, you can definitely indulge in Japan. What's more, if you are there on New Year's eve, you'll not miss the Joya-no-Kane, where temples bells across the country are rung 108 times starting at midnight!
Tokyo Disneyland is located at Urayasu City, Chiba outside Tokyo. This is a 115 acre theme park which was offically opened in 1983. It is the first Disneyland theme park constructed outside USA. The theme park consists of attractions such as World Bazaar, Adventureland, Westernland, Fantasyland and Tomorrowland. Tokyo Disneyland attracts approximately 10 million visitors per year and is one of the most visited theme parks in the world. It opens daily between 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 p.m. A visitor to the theme park requires day passport to enter the theme park. One day passport costs 5,800 yen for adults. Children below the age of three can enter the theme park free of charge. Make sure that you visit Tokyo Disneyland when you are in Tokyo for holidays!
